The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of pulp vitality on the periodontal reattachment following the free autogenous gingival graft. Maxillary bilateral premolars in each of 4 dogs were used. Denuded root surfaces were prepared after the labial alveolar osteotomies on the experimental region. 4 weeks later, the pulp in the right teeth was exstirpated and the root canals either were filled with gutta percha points and root canal sealer or were left open (infected teeth). The left teeth were kept in the vital pulp as a control. The graft was placed over the denuded root after 4 weeks. The animals were sacrificed 4 and 12 weeks postoperatively and a serial section of the premolars with surrounding tissues was prepared for a light microscopic examination. The clinical and histopathological findings showed that the gingival recession was more found in the infected teeth than the vital teeth and the former produced less periodontal reattachment as compared with the latter, and the interface between the donor and the recipient bed was characterized by the increased number and size of blood vessels.
Poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma was confirmed by endoscopic biopsy. Anticancer therapy was performed preoperatively, but was discontinued after the second intravenous administration of MFC because she developed nausea, vomiting and pancytopenia. On Jan. 18, 1980, gastrectomy with extended lymph node dissection was performed. Histologically, the excised stomach showed non-specific active ulcer (ul-IV) at the side of the tumor without evidence of residual cancer cells. The cause for the disappearance of the advanced carcinoma remains unknown. Although the dosage of the anticancer chemotherapy was quite small, this treatment may have promoted the regression of the tumor in conjunction with activated antitumor immunity of the host.

An enzyme immunoassay for polyamines is described which uses beta-galactosidase labeled spermine and antiserum raised in rabbits against spermine-bovine serum albumin synthesized by coupling spermine to mercaptosuccinylated bovine serum albumin with a bifunctional cross-linker, N-(gamma-maleimidobutyryloxy)-succinimide. The lower limit of detection by this assay, which involves a double antibody technique for the separation of antibody-bound and free antigen, was 1 ng of spermine per tube. The anti-spermine serum showed 88% cross-reaction with spermidine but only 0.13% with putrescine, 0.08% with 1,3-diaminopropane, and 0.04% with cadaverine. The method has been used to measure serum polyamine levels in healthy subjects and cancer patients, in whom mean concentrations of 58.1 ng/ml and 94.8 ng/ml (as spermine), were respectively noted. This enzyme immunoassay is specific, accurate and easy to perform, and appears suitable for routine clinical use.

We have purified S-100 protein from bovine brain using Ca2+-dependent affinity chromatography on N-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-1-naphthalenesulfonamide (W-7)-Sepharose (Endo, T., Tanaka, T., Isobe, T., Kasai, H., Okuyama, T., and Hidaka, H. (1981) J. Biol. Chem. 256, 12485-12489). By essentially the same procedure, W-7-Sepharose binding protein has been purified to apparent homogeneity from bovine abdominal adipose tissue. Electrophoretically, the purified protein from adipose tissue co-migrated with brain S-100b protein both in the presence and absence of sodium dodecyl sulfate and the protein was indistinguishable from brain S-100b region in terms of amino acid composition, two-dimensional tryptic peptide mapping and reactivity with anti-brain S-100b serum. Immunohistochemical analysis confirmed the existence of S-100b protein in the adipose cell where the protein seems to be located in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. Thus, the results indicate that the adipose cells contain the protein possibly identical with brain S-100b protein. In addition, the contents of S-100b protein in various rat tissues were measured by enzyme immunoassay method using the anti-bovine brain S-100b serum. Significant amounts of S-100b protein were found not only in the adipose tissue but also in the peripheral tissue such as trachea and skin. These observations suggest that S-100b protein should no longer be considered as a protein specific to nervous tissues.
An algorithm for parameter estimation is presented for the neural system model. Because of its firing mechanism analogous to that of the model based on the first time crossing problem, this problem is solved numerically for our model according to the results of Kostyukov et al. (1981). We propose the algorithm that estimates the parameters of the model considering the equivalence between the probability density function of the 1st crossing time and that of the interspike interval, which is derived from the interspike interval histogram by making use of the spline function technique. The ability of the algorithm is ensured by the application to the simulated interspike interval data. The parameter estimation is carried out also for the practical neural data recorded in the cat's optic tract fibers in both the spontaneous and the stimulated cases. These applications will show the effectiveness of the algorithm in practical cases.
Immunohistochemical studies were performed for the presence of S-100b protein in non-neoplastic and neoplastic salivary gland tissues by the peroxidase anti-peroxidase (PAP) method. Some cases of pleomorphic adenoma were investigated by immuno-electron microscopy. S-100b protein could not be detected in epithelial cells of intercalated ducts, acini, striated ducts and excretory ducts of non-neoplastic salivary gland. However, myoepithelial cells surrounding the acini and intercalated ducts were specifically stained by S-100b protein. In pleomorphic adenomas, S-100b protein-positive cells could be mostly observed in the myxoid and chondroid areas, and the basal layer cells of the double-layered ductal cells were also positive. In clear cell adenoma, the clear cells were also S-100b protein positive. In adenoid cystic carcinomas, S-100b protein-positive cells could be found in trabecular areas, but not in tumor cells showing cribriform-pattern. In other tumors (Warthin's tumor, oxyphilic adenoma, basal cell adenoma, mucoepidermoid tumor and acinar cell carcinoma), S-100b protein positive cells were seldom observed. Immuno-electron microscopically, S-100b protein was diffusely distributed in the cytoplasm of myoepithelial cells as well as of tumor cells of pleomorphic adenoma, being distributed especially on the membrane of endoplasmic reticulum and the outer nuclear membrane.
We have established a method for detecting virus receptors in the tissue sections and have been able to clarify the distribution of cellular receptors for Sendai virus in various mouse organs, including trachea, esophagus, large intestine and cerebrum. The virus receptors were detected in ciliated cells of the trachea, as to be expected for a pneumotropic virus. The lamina propria and connective tissue of the mouse esophagus and large intestine, immediately under the epithelium, contained an abundance at virus receptors, but very few were detected in the epithelium of these organs. In mouse cerebrum, the cells lining the ventricles had a large number of virus receptors.
The acute effects of the partial reduction of coronary blood flow (CBF) on electrical and metabolic changes in myocardium were studied in 59 dogs. In seven dogs with a CBF reduction of 20% to 49%, the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content (3.59 +/- 0.45 mumol/gm) and the width of the composite electrogram (54 +/- 5 msec) were not significantly different from those of 14 control dogs. In 14 dogs with a CBF reduction of 50% to 74%, ATP decreased significantly (3.09 +/- 0.30 mumol/gm, p less than 0.01); however, widening of the composite electrogram was not noted. Malignant ventricular arrhythmias developed in 5 of 10 dogs with a CBF reduction of 75% to 90% and 6 of 14 dogs with a 100% occlusion, but in none of the dogs with a CBF reduction of less than 75%. Marked widening of the composite electrogram (94 +/- 42 msec, p less than 0.05; and 115 +/- 54 msec, p less than 0.001) and further decrease in ATP (2.49 +/- 0.28 mumol/gm, p less than 0.001; and 2.66 +/- 0.45 mumol/gm, p less than 0.05) were noted in these two groups with a CBF reduction of greater than or equal to 75%. In conclusion, more advanced ischemia was mandatory for electrical derangements than for metabolic deterioration.
