We have experienced 40 cases of Crohn's disease from 1970 to 1984 and surgical treatments were performed in 22 cases. Ileocolitis was found in 10, ileitis in 6, colitis in 5 and appendix was involved in 1 case. Postoperative follow-up is accomplished in all cases. Recurrences are confirmed in 7 cases (35%). Microscopic findings at the resected stump showed no significant difference in recurrent rate. Recurrence was found in 2 of 6 inflammatory positive cases (33%). And 5 were recurred in 13 negative cases (38%). Mean recurred time, however, is shorter in positive cases (1 Yr 10 mos) compared with negative cases (4 yrs 7 mos). We have performed intraoperative endoscopy for the decision of the scope of resection in recent 7 cases, of which 2 cases recurred (follow-up time: 6 years). Quality of life in operated cases was almost good except 1 recurrent case. Even if operated case is recurred, patients are easily managed and leading in satisfactory life.

The authors have studied 51 cases of SSPE, mainly focusing their attention upon clinical and EEG signs of the onset of the illness. Clinical disorders have been classified in the 3 following categories: psychic prevailing, neurologic prevailing, and visual disorders prevailing. These 3 categories do not have the same evolution and may not have the same prognosis. Concerning EEG disorders, the typical periodic complex topography allows to recognize 3 groups: bilateral and symmetrical complexes, bilateral but asymmetrical complexes, and unilateral complexes. These 3 groups may be further analysed, according to an anterior or posterior prevalence of the periodic complex. The authors think that this distinction may be of interest for diagnostic precision.
Computed tomography in a case of mesenteric Castleman tumor showed a well-circumscribed homogeneous soft tissue density mass with moderate contrast enhancement after injection of contrast material. These findings correlate well with previously reported mediastinal Castleman tumors.

Thirteen infants and 2 children with Herpes simplex encephalitis are reported and the authors emphasize the diagnostic value of several investigations: the neurological examination (fits followed by early motor deficit on the same side and coma), the EEG (periodicity and asymmetry of the trace), the CT scan (hypodensity in the frontotemporal areas), the level of the Interferon alpha in blood and cerebrospinal fluid, the electrophoretic pattern of cerebrospinal fluid proteins and the comparative study of cerebrospinal fluid/serum antibodies towards several viral antigens.
A 8-day-old boy with congenital hydrocephalus was given a shunt operation. Computed tomography (CT) revealed marked internal hydrocephalus and a high density area about the aqueduct of Sylvius, in the fourth ventricle and perhaps partly in the third ventricle which was completely absorbed one month later. Later conray ventriculography demonstrated aqueductal obstruction. Neuroradiologically there was neither neoplastic nor vascular lesion. The patient achieved almost normal motor and mental development at 9 months of age. The cephalopelvic discrepancy and vacuum extraction are thought to be the most likely caused of the hemorrhage. The site of hemorrhage was quite unusual as a neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage.

Using Golgi-stained serial sections obtained at the sacro-caudal levels of the cat spinal cord, it was possible to reconstruct the trajectory of primary afferents. They were classified into two groups: reliable primary afferents directly traced from the dorsal root and probable primary afferents traced from the dorsal funiculus or Lissauer's tract. The diameters of the reliable primary afferents vary from 0.88-1.88 mum. According to their courses, reliable primary afferents as well as probable primary afferents were classified into three groups: the first is distributed to both medial and lateral halves of the dorsal horn, the second to the medial half, and the third to the lateral half. Commissural fibers were also observed among the probable primary afferents. The rostro-caudal and medio-lateral extents of reliable primary afferents are found to be between 250 and 950 mum and 270 and 700 mum respectively, while those of the probable primary afferents were between 125 and 670 mum and 270 and 1,640 mum respectively. These primary afferent fibers are connected with at least two or more laminae of the dorsal horn gray matter.
