Estrogen and progesterone receptors in epithelial ovarian tumours.

A study of the estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) status and content in 43 patients with histologically proven primary epithelial ovarian tumours was undertaken. The results of ER and PR status in 604 primary epithelial ovarian carcinomas of different histological types were analyzed in a combined material collected from the literature (576 cases) and 28 cases from our own study. Statistical analysis showed significant difference in ER status, but not in PR status, between the different histological types. The highest proportion of ER positive tumours was found among the serous and endometrioid types. Thus when analysing the correlation of ER status with other parameters in ovarian cancer, histological type should be taken into account. In 3 benign, 4 borderline and 14 malignant serous ovarian tumours no statistically significant difference was found in steroid receptor content and status. In 11 patients with multiple tumour locations, only two patients with mixed serous/endometrioid malignant tumours had different receptor status in different tumour locations.

Uterine myoma in pregnancy.

A review was made of the medical records of 76 patients with uterine myomas during pregnancy with the aim of studying the time and method of diagnosis, symptomatology, treatment, and outcome of pregnancy. In 11 patients (15%) myomectomy was performed during pregnancy. The frequency of abortion was 18% in patients treated both conservatively and with myomectomy. Myomectomy during pregnancy is discouraged in the literature. In cases where conservative treatment cannot be practised it seems that the risk of spontaneous abortion during pregnancy is not significantly increased when myomectomy is performed.

[Should electronic mouth thermometers be used in routine everyday hospital practice? Usefulness of mouth thermometers].

An oral electronic thermometer was compared with Hg-thermometer used rectally in the daily clinical routine. The rectal temperatures were, on an average, 0.7 degrees C higher than the oral temperatures. In 27% of the cases, the difference between rectal and oral measurement was more than 1 degree C. The variations between the differences of oral and rectal temperature measurement were unacceptable. It is concluded that the precision of oral electronic thermometers was not found to be satisfactory, and employment of this apparatus can not be recommended in daily clinical work.

[JJ-catheters for internal urinary diversion].

Sixty-four patients with obstruction or lesions of the ureter were, on 115 therapeutic sessions, submitted to internal diversion of urine employing JJ-catheters. Prior to the first treatment, 53% of the patients had been treated with nephrostomy catheters on account of postrenal obstruction. In 12% of the therapeutic sessions, the patients developed pyrexia of over 38.5 degrees C (101.3 degrees F) in the 24 hours immediately after introduction of the catheter. Only few patients had complications in the form of macroscopic haematuria, migration of the catheter, incrustations and perforation of the ureter. It is concluded that JJ-catheters provide a good and gentle method of relieving obstruction in the upper urinary passages. Bacteriological investigation and treatment of urinary infection is recommended prior to introduction of the catheter.

[Ureteral stenosis following radiotherapy of uterine cervix cancer].

Stricture of the ureter following irradiation therapy for cancer of the uterine cervix is observed in 0.2-2.8% of all patients. The incidence in the literature is reviewed. The etiology, anatomical localization, time of development and the diagnostic problems are discussed. Old and more recent methods of treatment are mentioned and two cases treated with JJ-catheters are reported.

Cystic juvenile granulosa cell tumor of the ovary.

Sex cord-stromal tumors comprise approximately 5% of ovarian neoplasms and among these the granulosa cell tumor is the one most commonly seen (1). Two histopathologically well defined patterns of granulosa cell tumor are known: the common adult granulosa cell tumor (AGCT), and the less frequent juvenile granulosa cell tumor (JGCT) (1, 2, 3, 4). In addition to morphological variation, the two tumor types differ in prognosis and clinical course (4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

Vasectomy with rivanol injection and fertility control by vital staining with eosin.

A material is presented of 66 males who were treated with Rivanol injection during vasectomy in order to obtain immediate sterility. The fertility control was established using vital eosin staining on seminal fluid at home. One case of recanalization occurred. All patients had infertile spermatozoa or aspermia 10 days after surgery. Increased frequency of complications was not observed. Vital staining with eosin is found to be practical and easily used.
