Therapeutic effects of tiopronin on chronic hepatitis: a double-blind clinical study.

The efficacy of tiopronin (2-mercaptopropionyl glycine) 600 mg daily in the treatment of chronic active or chronic persistent hepatitis has been assessed in a double-blind controlled clinical trial of 12 weeks involving 165 Japanese patients with histologically proven disease. Treatment with the drug was associated with a significant improvement in abnormalities of serum transaminase and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase, with reversion towards baseline values on stopping the drug. Improvement was independent of the histological classification of the disease, or HBsAg status. The drug was well tolerated with few side-effects. The results of this short-term study indicate that tiopronin may be of value in the treatment of chronic hepatitis.

Developmental studies on EEG spectral analysis in mentally retarded children.

The EEG developmental characteristics of 36 mentally retarded infants were investigated by auto-power spectrum analysis. A significant positive correlation with age was found in the dominant frequency in all of the three regions, occipital, central, and frontal. A tendency for the generalized component to increase was found in 3- to 5-year-old subjects as compared with those aged 6 months to 1 year and 7 months. Developmental coherence characteristics could not be found. The peak components tended to show higher coherence values in the frontal-central relation than in the central-occipital and occipital-frontal ones.

Bu-2313, a new antibiotic complex active against anaerobes. I. Production, isolation and properties of Bu-2313 A and B.

An unidentified oligosporic actinomycete strain, No. E864-61, produced two new antibiotics, Bu-2313 A (C27H35NO9) and Bu-2313 B (C26H33NO9). Bu-2313 A and B each exhibited a broad antibiotic spectrum against Gram-positive and Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria, and showed in vivo activity against experimental infections produced by B. fragilis and C. perfringens. Bu-2313 also inhibited some aerobic bacteria such as streptococci. Bu-2313 B was approximately two-fold more active than Bu-2313 A.
