Cytochrome a-type terminal oxidases derived from Thiobacillus novellus and Nitrobacter agilis have been purified to a homogeneous state as judged from their electrophoretic behavior and their subunit structures studied by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. The T. novellus enzyme is composed of two kinds of subunits of 32,000 and 23,000 daltons and its minimum molecular weight is 55,000 on the basis of heme content and amino acid composition. The N. agilis enzyme also has two kinds of subunits of 40,000 and 27,000 daltons and its minimum molecular weight is 66,000 on the basis of heme content and amino acid composition. Therefore, the molecule of each enzyme is composed of two kinds of subunits which resemble the subunits of the eukaryotic cytochrome oxidase biosynthesized in the mitochondrion at least with respect to molecular weight.
We used a computed tomography to look for evidence of cerebral changes in a three-year-10-month-old girl with SSPE. The area of decreased density on CT corresponded to inflammatory and demyelinative lesions in the brain. CT scans seem to be a useful tool for more accurate assessment in the diagnosis of SSPE.
Neonatal ICR/Ha mice were injected subcutaneously with a single dose of 25, 50 and 100 microgram of 4-acetylaminobiphenyl (AAB), N-hydroxy-4-acetylaminobiphenyl (N-OH-AAB), 2-acetylaminofluorene (AAF), or N-hydroxy-2-acetylaminofluorene (N-OH-AAF) alone or together with 2,5% piperonyl butoxide (PB) in tricaprylin, negative control groups were injected with tricaprylin, and positive control groups were injected with 30 microgram of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA), alone or with PB. PB induced synergistic toxicity in the various groups of mice injected with the nonhydroxylated and hydroxylated amine carcinogens, or with DMBA, as compared with groups injected with carcinogen alone. AAB, N-OH-AAB, AAF, and N-OH-AAF all induced dose-related hepatocarcinogenicity in male, but not female mice, which was not consistently influenced by concomitant administration of PB. DMBA control groups developed pulmonary adenomas and lymphomas in both sexes, and hepatomas in males, whose incidences were not modified by PB.

A 22 year old man with two extra-adrenal pheochromocytomas located in the mediastinum and in the pelvis is presented. We believe this is the first report in Japan of extra-adrenal multiple pheochromocytomas in adult located in the two distant places.
The influence of intravenous administration of cimetidine on excitatory response of gastric secretion and motility of innervated or denervated pouches caused by electrical stimulation of vagal and splanchnic nerves and administration of tetragastrin or histamine respectively were investigated. Dogs were anesthetized with nembutal, and also immobilized with gallamine tricthiodide. The following results were obtained. (1) Administration of cimetidine inhibited the augmentation of gastric juice and acid output from the innervated corpus pouch by vagal and splanchnic nerve stimulation and vestibulo-gastric excitatory reflexes of gastric secretory functions via the vagal or splanchnic nerve. (2) Augmentation of gastric acid output from the denervated corpus pouch caused by electrical stimulation of vagal and splanchnic nerves was inhibited by administration of cimetidine. (3) Administration of cimetidine inhibited the augmentation of acid output from denervated corpus pouch caused by injection of tetragastrin or histamine. (4) The excitatory responses of gastric motility caused by nerve stimulation and administration of tetragastrin or histamine could not be effected by cimetidine. (5) No changes were observed in the gastric venous blood flow by continuous intravenous injection of cimetidine, but by rapid injection both the flow was augmented and the systemic blood pressure decreased transiently. These results indicate that histamine stimulates gastric secretory cells directly.
To make clear the control mechanism of force generation in human muscle, the electrical activity of the brachialis muscle was studied at various levels of contraction force by recording single motor unit discharges as well as mass electromyograms (EMGs). The firing rate of motor units increased with force along an S-shaped curve. At low levels of force, motor units increased their firing rates steeply with force. At intermediate levels of force, each motor unit increased its firing rate linearly with force at lower rates. As the maximum of force was approached, the firing rate increased very steeply, reaching as high as 50 Hz or more. By applying a new method of statistical processing to mass EMGs, the number of active motor units and the size of action potential were estimated at each level of force. The number of active motor units increased monotonously with muscle force. Motor units recruited at high levels of force had larger amplitudes of action potentials than those recruited at lower levels. Calculations were made to determine how the relative contribution to an increase in muscle force is varied between recruitment and the increase in firing rate. The contribution of recruitment gradually decreased with the increase in force. Up to about 70% of the maximum force, recruitment is the major mechanism for increasing the force of contraction.

An unusual lipoprotein pattern on polyacrylamide-gel disc-electrophoresis was observed in 37 year-old male diagnosed as alcoholic liver injury. The electrophoretic lipoprotein pattern consisted of a major band of pre-beta mobility and minor intermediate, fast-beta and slow-alpha bands. The normal beta band was virtually absent and the alpha band was diminished. The abnormal lipoprotein pattern was observed one week after discontinuing alcohol consumption when marked hypertriglyceridemia demonstrated earlier had already normalized leaving a moderate hypercholesterolemia with reduced esterified cholesterol and abnormal liver function tests. The lipoprotein abnormalities were completely normal one month later. The appearance of a major pre-beta band with normal triglyceride and high cholesterol levels is discussed in relation to the formation of larger triglyceride-rich LDL particles in recovery from alcoholic hepatitis.
