Clear-cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses. Report of two cases.

Two cases of clear-cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses are reported. The first patient was a 19-year-old man with a tumor in the medial collateral ligament of the knee. The tumor was enucleated, and after postoperative radiotherapy a wide local excision was done. The patient was symptomless 4 1/2 years after the operation. The other patient was a man aged 68 with a tumor between the medial malleolus and the Achilles tendon. He also received postoperative radiotherapy after enucleation. Three months later a metastasis was noticed in the ipsilateral para-iliac nodes. The patient died 16 months after the operation. The histology and clinical course of the two cases are analyzed. Some integrative remarks based on earlier reports of 33 cases and the present two cases are presented.

Thymoma metastasizing to extrathoracic sites. A case report.

In the case presented, metastases to extrathoracic sites developed in a 53-year-old man four years after the diagnosis of inoperable thymoma had been established. The appearance of metastases was preced by an extensive intrathoracic invasion of the tumour. The thymoma was of epithelial subtype which was the most common (67 percent) type also in the previously published 29 cases of thymomas metastasizing to extrathoracic sites.

An inhibitor of chemotaxis and phagocytosis in reticulum cell sarcoma.

In a study of neutrophil functions in haematological disorders using in vitro techniques, a heat-stable inhibitor of chemotaxis and phagocytosis was demonstrated in the plasma and serum of a 64-year-old woman with reticulum cell sarcoma. In partial purification by chromatography, the inhibitor activity could not be separated from IgG. Clinically the patient did not exhibit abnormal susceptibility to infections.

Effect of long-term administration of ethanol to the rat: lipids, collagen and other proteins, and Mallory bodies in the liver.

Rats drank ethanol, on the average 1.20 g/100 g body weight, for various periods up to nearly 300 days. Experimental variables included a high-fat, low-protein diet, administration of additional ethanol by stomach tube, and CCl4 injections instead of ethanol. Growth was retarded by all the variables, especially by the high-fat, low-protein diet. The specific histological finding in the ethanol groups was the presence of Mallory bodies. Significant increase in total liver lipids was caused by ethanol, and rapid fat accumulation, inflammatory changes, and even fibrosis and cirrhosis by the high-fat, low-protein diet and the CCl4 injections. Ethanol raised the concentrations of collagen and soluble protein in the liver; the collagen content was increased also by the high-fat, low-protein diet and the CCl4 injections. The incorporation of proline to collagen was stimulated in incubated liver slices from both ethanol-treated and high-fat, low-protein-fed rats. These treatments also increased the concentration of free proline in the liver, thus augmenting the protein synthesis in fibroblasts.
