[Measurements, form and form variants of the thyroid and cricoid cartilages].

Different measurements of the height and oblique landmarks are given. There are included the shape of the tubercula and the distances to landmarks and the cornua. On the cricoid cartilage, there are measured the height of arcus and lamina and its antero-posterior length, also the distances to the inferior horn, the inferior tubercle, and the inferior-anterior border of the thyroid cartilage.

[Use of biochemical and biophysical indicators in muscles (m. longissimus dorsi) obtained by harpoon biopsy in predicting the quality of pork].

Forty-two pigs (German Landrace and commercial hybrids) were subjected to harpoon biopsy. A possibility of using the biochemical (adenosine triphosphate, creatine phosphate, glucose-6-phosphate, glucose, lactate, glycogen) and biophysical (pH value, R-value, water-binding capacity) parameters of muscle (m. longissimus dorsi) for forecasting the quality of pork was demonstrated. The post-mortem processes were simulated in muscle bioptate (1 hour of incubation at 39 degrees C). The highest correlations with meat quality in slaughtered animals (pH) were recorded in adenosine triphosphate, creatine phosphate, R-value, pH value, lactate and glycogen. No significant differences were found between the left and right side of the muscle (m. longissimus dorsi) in the studied parameters.

[Biochemical and biophysical indicators in muscle biopsies (m. longissimus dorsi) in relation to the halothane and creatine kinase test in pigs].

The largest differences in the studied biophysical (pH value, R-value, water-binding capacity) and biochemical (adenosine triphosphate, creatine phosphate, glucose-6-phosphate, glucose, lactate, glycogen) parameters of the biopsy of m. longissimus dorsi between the hal+ (8 pigs) and hal- (4 pigs) groups were found at weights above 80 kg. The hal- pigs showed an increase in the anaerobic nature of metabolism in m. longissimus dorsi, in relation to weight. The activity of creatine kinase in the blood of 43 pigs showed only low or medium correlations with the quality of meat after slaughter.

Thymolipoma in association with myasthenia gravis.

Among 72 thymic tumors that were examined we have found five (7.5%) thymolipomas. Two of these patients have had clinical symptoms. One, a five-year-old boy, has had an erythrocyte hypoplasia as well as a hypogammaglobulinemia. The other patient, a 56-year-old man, has had myasthenia gravis. This case is the second in the world literature in which a thymolipoma is associated with symptoms of myasthenia gravis. The clinical, radiologic, and histopathologic findings and the pathogenesis of thymolipoma are discussed.

Metabolic inactivation of 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) by rat-liver microsomal preparations.

A modified Ames assay was developed that used an arginine-requiring mutant of Chlamydomonas reinhardii as an indicator organism. By counting the numbers of colonies formed and Arg+ revertants, we studied the influence of a rat-liver S9 mix (S9 fraction plus co-factors) on the toxic and mutagenic activities of 8-MOP plus black light. Both activities were decreased after pre-incubation of 5 micrograms 8-MOP/ml with S9 mix at 37 degrees C. S9 fractions without co-factors were almost completely inactive.

Rhesus incompatibility and aplastic anemia as the consequence of split chimerism after bone-marrow transplantation for severe combined immunodeficiency.

A patient with severe combined immunodeficiency received three transplants of bone marrow from the HLA-B- and -D-identical mother. The first transplantation led to a severe graft-versus-host reaction followed by immunological reconstitution. A split chimerism was found with engraftment only of the maternal lymphocytes. Five months after the transplantation an autoimmune hemolytic anemia was observed which was due to rhesus incompatibility as well as polyspecific antibodies. At the same time agranulocytosis developed and 9 mth after the first transplantation the child suffered from aplastic anemia. Two further attempts failed to engraft the maternal hematopoiesis. The child died during the treatment with cyclophosphamide as conditioning for a third transplantation.

[The intravenous urography with rapid sequence films of the early arterial phase (author's transl)].

The intravenous urography alone as a screening-test in renal and renovascular hypertension does not give the expected results. A technique is described how to improve and enlarge the sensitivity of the intravenous urography by rapid sequence films of the early arterial phase. By the opacification of the aorta and the renal arteries it is possible to detect a renovascular hypertension. Hexabrix is a well tolerated contrast medium, which because of its low osmolality is suitable for injection as a bolus.

[Small bowel stenoses as a consequence of intrauterine transfusion (author's transl)].

An infant is reported who, because of Rhesus incompatibility, required 4 antenatal blood transfusions. At the last of these transfusions performed during the 30th week of pregnancy, the catheter could not be removed and was left in the foetus's abdomen. Two weeks later, spontaneous delivery of an 1820 gm. male infant resulted. He had to be operated on on the 2nd day of life because of small bowel atresia, which was caused by two severe intestinal strictures which had been produced by the catheter. Following removal of the catheter and resection of the strictures, the post-operative course was essentially uneventful.

Isotope ratios in photosynthetic oxygen.

Axenic suspensions of the fresh water green alga Ankistrodesmus braunii were illuminated under aerobic conditions. The released gas mixture was introduced into the ion source of an isotope mass spectrometer, which recorded the 18O/16O ratio. The 18O content of the photosynthetic oxygen (approximately 0.199%) exceeded that of the cell water (approximately 0.197%) significantly.

Immunofluorescent serum gliadin antibodies in children with coeliac disease and various malabsorptive disorders. I. Technique, clinical evaluation and diagnostic use of a gliadin antibody assay using pyruvic aldehyde-treated human red cells.

An immunofluorescent gliadin antibody assay is described using pyruvic aldehyde-stabilized human erythrocytes coated with gliadin. Fifty coeliac children all had high serum IgG-antigliadin titres during a normal diet or a challenge with gluten. On a gluten-free diet (30 children), titres were much lower. In patients followed-up for one year on a gluten-free diet, an initial rise in titres was followed by a slow decline. On challenge, IgG-antigliadin titres showed a slow rise or persistence at the same level in most patients. Fifty-two percent of control children with malabosrptive disorders, but without the typical "flat" mucosal lesion on jejunal biopsy, were shown to have positive titres in their sera, as were 6% of normal children and 4% of adult blood donors. The fluorescent antibody technique was compared with methods commonly used to detect wheat-protein antibodies, and was found to be superior to all of them. The immunofluorescent gliadin antibody assay appears to be useful in following-up children with coeliac disease, and in selecting patients for jejunal biopsy, although it does not replace biopsy.
