Noradrenaline maximally stimulates adenylate cyclase activity in brown adipocytes from foetal rats by 400%. Isoproterenol maximally stimulates the adenylate cyclase activity by 600%. The differences observed in the dose-response curves of adenylate cyclase activity to isoproterenol or noradrenaline were prevented in the presence of clonidine (a alpha 2-agonist) or yohimbine (alpha 2-antagonist) respectively. (3H)-clonidine binds specifically to brown fat membranes saturable (from 1.75 to 20 nM). Scatchard analysis revealed a Bmax of 22 fmol/mg and a KD of 10 nM.

Sheep cold stressed for 10.5 h had plastic coats applied then the cold stress was continued. In 9 of 10 sheep (test group) showing hypothermia at the time coats were applied, body temperatures had returned to near normal 2.5 h later and to normal in 13.5 h. One sheep severely hypothermic before the coat was applied did not improve and was killed after 2.5 h. Sheep that were cold stressed without coats (wet controls) developed marked hypothermia and were killed between 10.5 h and 21 h. Rectal temperatures remained normal in controls that were cold stressed with coats on (coated wet controls) and in the controls not subjected to wetting (dry controls). Plasma cortisol increased markedly in the cold stressed sheep until plastic coats were applied, but the levels had fallen to normal levels 20 h later. Serum thyroxine levels increased at a faster rate in the test group and in wet controls than in the dry controls and coated wet controls during the first 9 h of cold stress. In 4 sheep of the test group energy utilisation increased markedly and remained high for a variable time after coats were applied then gradually returned to pre-cold stress levels. Liver tyrosine aminotransferase levels of the wet controls were markedly elevated compared to levels found in the test group sheep killed 79.5 h after coats were applied. Histological changes in the spleen and liver of wet controls was absent or only mildly present in the test group sheep. There was severe depletion of muscle and liver glycogen in the wet controls compared with the test group sheep, which were similar to the dry controls and coated wet controls.

The developmental progression of thymidine kinase from the electrophoretically slow-migrating 'fetal' forms to the fast-migrating 'adult' form was examined weekly in the serum of 5 premature infants. Only the fetal forms were present up to 32 weeks after conception. The adult form appeared along with the fetal forms until 39 weeks post-conception; thereafter, only the adult form was detected. With respect to post-conceptional age, the timing of the changeover from fetal to adult serum, thymidine kinase was the same in the prematurely born infants as in stillborn infants at an equivalent gestational age.
The population of 42 adolescents admitted to the Sunnybrook Adolescent Unit in 1977 is described and compared with other populations of general hospital units previously presented in the literature, in order to derive implications for patient selection, treatment techniques and outcome. Analysis of historical, family, and mental status variables provided a cluster of factors leading to successful or unsuccessful treatment in the hospital. Three global types of patients emerged, based on diagnostic groups who have different treatment experiences in hospital, and who require three distinctly different types of treatment programs. Limitations of treatment are also discussed.

Seven healthy female volunteers (aged 50 to 67 years) have been subjected to a thermal stress and their sweat rates evaluated using hygrosensors on five different locations on their body surface. It was found that the sweating rate was highest on the forehead in all but one of the subjects with the chest being the next most prominent site for the response. Five of the subjects were restudied after aspirin pretreatment. In the presence of this drug, resting body temperature was lowered, sweating occurred at a lower oral temperature and the mean sweating rate at a standardized body temperature was significantly higher. These findings are consistent with aspirin's known pharmacological actions, although in this study the increased sweating rate have been demonstrated in afebrile subjects.
The developmental progression of thymidine kinase from the electrophoretically slow-migrating 'fetal' forms to the fast-migrating 'adult' form was examined in human serum and fetal liver. In fetal liver, only the fetal forms of the enzyme were present at 17 weeks' gestation. A transitional period followed in that both enzyme forms were identified and by 24 weeks only the adult form was detected in fetal liver. This same enzyme changeover pattern--fetal to transitional to adult--occurred at a later time in human serum as it took place between 30 and 40 weeks' gestation.
