We evaluated whether assay of tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) in the serum ia valuable for the determination of cancer stages compared to other tumor markers such as CEA, AFP, and ferritin. The study population consisted of 79 gastric cancer patients and 212 patients with benign gastroenteric disease. The percentage of positive cases for TPA (higher than 200u/l) was 41% in gastric cancer and 20% in active peptic ulcer. Serum TPA levels in well differentiated carcinoma and signet ring cell carcinoma were higher than that in other histological types. Serum TPA levels correlated well with the stage of the gastric cancer.

The present study was undertaken to determine whether hepatic ischemia and the subsequent reflow of blood had any effect on the levels of endogenous coenzyme Q homologs, alpha-tocopherol, and glutathione, and whether coenzyme Q10 (6 mg/kg of body weight) altered these levels. Ischemia of the rat liver for 90 min resulted in decreases of 19.1 and 19.6% of endogenous alpha-tocopherol and total glutathione (GSH + GSSG) without significant changes in the levels of endogenous total coenzyme Q homologs (oxidized and reduced). Restoration of the blood flow resulted in marked decreases in endogenous coenzyme Q homologs, alpha-tocopherol, and total glutathione in the control group. In coenzyme Q10-treated animals, however, there were no changes in the levels of endogenous total coenzyme Q9, alpha-tocopherol, or total glutathione as well as in the level of the enhanced total coenzyme Q10 during the reperfusion period. On the other hand, decreases in alpha-tocopherol and total glutathione during the period of ischemia remained unchanged. These results are compatible with the assumption that cellular damage caused by hepatic ischemia can be explained by free radical reaction processes during ischemia and especially, reperfusion and suggest that exogenous coenzyme Q10 functions as an antioxidant with endogenous coenzyme Q homologs, alpha-tocopherol, and glutathione in lipid peroxidation during reperfusion.
Two patients with thyroid carcinoma infiltrating bilateral internal jugular veins were treated. In reconstruction of the internal jugular vein by implantation of an autogenous venous segment or Gore-Tex artificial vessel, the repaired area soon became obstructed. The repaired area with the Impra-Flex artificial vessel became obstructed again one month after the implantation. In the reconstruction by ipsilateral end-to-end anastomosis between the internal and external jugular veins, good circulation was apparent even 2 years after the operation. The internal-external jugular vein anastomosis is expected to increase the safety of single-stage bilateral excision of the internal jugular vein, as an adjunct to total thyroidectomy, in the surgical treatment of thyroid carcinoma.

We evaluated whether assay of tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) in sera is valuable for the determination of cancer stages compared to other tumor markers such as CEA, AFP, beta2-microglobulin, ferritin, and elastase-1. The study population consisted of cancer patients (33 gastric cancers, 7 colo-rectal cancers and 15 hepatomas), 169 patients with benign gastro-enteric diseases and 72 healthy volunteers. The percentage of positive cases for TPA (higher than 200 u/l) was 61% in gastric cancer, 71% in colo-rectal cancer and 87% in hepatoma. In certain non-cancerous conditions, such as gastric ulcer (active stage), acute hepatitis and chronic hepatitis, the TPA levels were increased over the level of healthy volunteers. There was no significant correlation between TPA and the other tumor markers. Our study suggests that TPA may be useful in the identification and evaluation of cancer patients.
