Malignant mixed mesodermal tumor of ovary.

A case of primary malignant mixed mesodermal tumor (MMMT) of the ovary arising de novo in a post-menopausal multiparous female is reported. The tumor contained heterologous elements in the form of cartilage and fat in addition to carcinosarcomatous areas. Post-operatively, single-agent chemotherapy was administered and up to the time of reporting the patient has been alive and well. Because of the rarity of these tumors the proper treatment remains a dilemma. The differential diagnosis of MMMT of ovary and teratocarcinoma is considered, as the two are confused frequently.

Culdocentesis in tubal pregnancy.

Culdocentesis was carried out in 92 suspected cases of ectopic pregnancy and was positive in 90%. Laparotomy confirmed the accuracy of culdocentesis in 97.5% of the cases of acute tubal rupture, 87.5% of tubal abortions and 80% of 'intact' tubal pregnancies.

Amnion graft for treatment of congenital absence of the vagina.

The successful application of an amniotic membrane graft in the treatment of congenital absence of the vagina is described. Follow up with vaginal smears and vaginal biopsies revealed that amnion when used alone with mesenchyme applied to the host gives protection to the underlying granulation tissue and facilitates epithelialization.

Lymphocyte subpopulation in acute viral hepatitis.

Studies of peripheral blood lymphocytes were performed in 41 patients with acute viral hepatitis, in grade III-IV coma; 16 patients were in the third trimester of pregnancy. There were significant reductions in absolute lymphocyte count and T cell number in patients who succumbed to the disease, when compared with those who survived. B cell counts were similar in the two groups and migration inhibition test with BCG antigen was normal. It is postulated that a decrease in the number of cells interacting in cell-mediated immune reactions is related to prognosis in acute viral hepatitis.

Leprosy and female reproductive organs.

Thirty-five adult female patients with bacillary positive leprosy were studied to determine its effect on menarche, menstrual cycle, fertility, and menopause. Endometrial biopsies studied in 26 patients showed no evidence of leprosy bacilli granuloma or tubercle bacilli on culture. Menstrual blood examined in six patients with bacillemia did not reveal leprosy bacilli. Products of conception examined from two patients were negative for granulomata or leprosy bacilli. Leprosy was found to have no direct effect on menarche, menstruation, fertility, and menopause.

Evaluation of the supine pressor test.

115 normotensive healthy primigravidae have been investigated during 28-32 weeks of pregnancy for early detection of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) by performing the roll-over test (ROT) of according to Gant et al. No statistically significant relation was found between a positive supine pressor test and development of PIH. The hydrostatic effect, calculated in 15 of these women, seems to influence the results of the ROT. The other factors which can influence the blood pressure with change of position have also been enumerated.
