[Descriptive study of Fortesan: a new food product for preschool children].

Pre-school Children acceptability of a high nutritive value and low cost new food product (Fortesán) was studied. This mixture is formed by W.S.B. powdered milk and cacao. The purpose was to establish its a acceptability by the children and their mothers, in the Santiago population. A similar study had been already performed in 1972 in another marginal urban area and in rural areas. Inicial and final heights and weights were measured, and a socio-economical and acceptability survey was performed in all cases. The same experimental group was used as a control of it self. The study lasted 4 months, from April-May 1973 until August-September 1973. The sample was formed by children from 1 to 6 years old, coming from different socioeconomical levels. Results showed a good acceptability of the product both by the mothers and their children. It also showed a good influence in the height and weight that the children reached.

The effects of prostaglandin E1 and sodium meclofenamate on blood pressure in renal hypertensive rats.

Conflicting evidence exists regarding the ability of PGE1 to normalize blood pressure in renal hypertensive rats. We performed experiments to determine the effect of PGE1 (15 mug/kg i.p. daily for 3 weeks) in renal hypertensive Wistars and found no significant change in systolic pressure. A higher dose (150 mug/kg i.p.) lowered pressure after 14 days of treatment, but not back to control levels. Further investigations are required to establish the mechanism whereby PGE1 evokes this fall. To test the hypothesis that endogenous prostaglandins have a hypotensive function in renal hypertension, experiments were performed using sodium meclofenamate to inhibit prostaglandin biosynthesis. In chronic hypertensive rats the drug had no significant effect, while in the acute phase of renal hypertension there was a dose-dependent inhibition of the pressure rise. The possibility is suggested that prostaglandins may initiate or sustain the acute phase of renal hypertension in rats.

The value of amoebic serology in an area of low endemicity.

One hundred sera from army patients who had had amoebiasis in the past and 113 sera from coloured immigrants attending a venereal diseases clinic were examined by four serological techniques. The indirect haemagglutination and the latex agglutination tests showed almost complete correlation; they are useful epidemiological tools but too sensitive and the antibodies on which they depend are too persistent for clinical use. The indirect fluorescent antibody test is a good clinical screening test, and in an area of low endemicity the gel diffusion precipitin test shows a close correlation with clinical disease.

Predicting length of stay of substance-using pregnant and postpartum women in day treatment.

Pregnant and postpartum substance-using women are a special population whose needs do not reflect those of the general substance-using communities. This study examined length of stay in a federally funded day treatment demonstration program in order to identify predictor variables that may help identify pregnant and postpartum substance-using women at high risk for dropping out of treatment. Variables from intake and exit questionnaires on a sample of 163 women were analyzed using multiple regression on both days in treatment and the logarithmic transformation of days in treatment. Few predictor variables were identified, although findings suggest that if a women is younger and self-referred, she may leave treatment sooner. As one of the first sets of published data on pregnant and postpartum women and retention in treatment, this study lays the groundwork for future research on the retention of pregnant and postpartum women in treatment, thereby facilitating the success of these women in overcoming their addiction.
