Clinical and research psychologists continue to be regarded stereotypically even by 187 students currently anticipating careers in psychology and closely related fields. This article gives data for 10 issues on which clinicians and researchers are perceived to differ. Specifically, a 10-item questionnaire is described which allows such stereotypes to be further explored or explained.
Despite extensive study, the pathogenic mechanisms of Behçet's disease remain uncertain. The ocular inflammation caused by this disease is severe, often causing significant visual loss and, although the nature of the cellular infiltrate has been examined in many of the involved organs, the infiltrating cells in inflamed eyes have not. To investigate the mechanisms involved in perpetuating the ocular inflammation, five enucleated eyes from patients with Behçet's disease were examined by immunohistochemical staining using a panel of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. Control eyes from patients with chronic intraocular inflammation from other causes were also examined. Cellular infiltrates were a consistent finding in choroid and periretinal scar tissue, formed almost entirely by mononuclear cells. T lymphocytes were found to predominate (largely the CD4+ subset). B lymphocytes and NK cells were infrequent findings but macrophages were present in significant numbers. No complement or immunoglobulin deposits were found. Infiltrating lymphocytes and macrophages were HLA DR positive. Retinal vascular and retinal pigment epithelium were only occasionally positive. Our findings suggest that cell mediated immunity, rather than immune complex deposition is responsible for the perpetuation of the ocular inflammation in Behçet's disease and that CD4+ T lymphocytes play a central role in this.
Diffractive bifocal contact lenses function by diverting incident light to two focal points. Light from near objects is focused by diffraction while that from distant objects is focused by conventional refraction. Both processes occur simultaneously throughout the full aperture of the lens. Fourteen aphakic and pseudophakic contact lens wearers were fitted with diffractive bifocal lenses and observed for an eight week period. Six (42.8%) were satisfied with the visual result. Five subjects (35.7%) discontinued lens wear complaining of poor quality of near vision. We conclude that these lenses may help selected aphakic patients to discard their reading glasses but the low acceptance rate suggests that this type of optic is probably not suitable for implantation as an intraocular lens.
Mezerein, the most active antitumor compound isolated from the daphne species of plants, has a structural similarity to phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), the major active compound isolated from croton oil. PMA is known to have tumor promoting activity and is a potent inflammatory agent. Mezerein has similarly been reported to have potent inflammatory properties but appears to be a weaker tumor promoter than PMA. While the effect of PMA on the function and metabolism of human blood cells has been extensively studied, there is little similar information concerning mezerein. Therefore, in these studies, we have compared the capacities of mezerein and PMA to activate the cytotoxic capacity and oxidative metabolism of human granulocyte (PMNs), monocyte, lymphocyte, and mononuclear cell (lymphocytes and monocytes) cultures in vitro. Mezerein stimulated the oxidative metabolism of PMNs in an identical manner to PMA as indicated by a burst in the activity of the HMPS pathway, the production of H2O2, hydroxyl radical and stable oxidants. Mezerein also stimulated the release of thromboxane B2 from PMNs. Both compounds activated the oxidative metabolism of monocytes but not the oxidative metabolism of lymphocytes. The enhanced oxidative metabolism of the phagocytic cells was associated with an increased cytotoxicity against human red cells which are sensitive to oxidant damage but not against the NK resistant Raji lymphoblast cell line or the SW1116 colon tumor cell line. Of interest is that mezerein did not augment significantly the minimal cytotoxic capacity (NK activity) of mononuclear cells, monocytes or freshly isolated lymphocyte cultures against the tumor cell targets used in our experiments. However, lymphocyte cultures preincubated for 15 hours with mezerein had a marked enhancement of cytotoxicity against the tumor targets. This activation was not observed in similarly treated mononuclear cell cultures suggesting a suppressor activity of the monocytes. Our data suggest that the potent inflammatory activity of mezerein similar to PMA, may be related to its capacity to activate the oxidative and arachidonic metabolism of phagocytic cells. In addition, the capacity of mezerein to activate the cytotoxic capacity of lymphocytes may relate to its reported in vivo antitumor activity.
A case is reported of a patient with long-standing, severe airflow obstruction requiring long-term nebulizer therapy developing a facial dermatitis in the area bounded by the nebulizer mask. The facial dermatitis seems to be the result of the combined irritancy of the nebulizer solutions and moisture, and prophylactic measures are suggested for patients requiring long-term nebulizer therapy.
This study examined 40 preschool children's understanding of the word touch. 24 drawings were presented one at a time to each child, and the children were instructed to describe each of the drawings and to classify them into drawings portraying touch or drawings showing no touch. 20 undergraduates were also interviewed. The same procedure was used, but in addition the undergraduates were asked to predict how preschool-age children would do on the same task. The results showed several ways in which the children's understanding of the word touch differed from that of an adult.
The majority of the cellular cadmium (less than 80%) in cadmium resistant Datura innoxia cells is bound to a small, metal induced peptide which is not metallothionein. This peptide consists of glutamate, cysteine and glycine in a ratio between 2:2:1 and 3:3:1 and has an apparent molecular weight of 776, under denaturing conditions. It is heat stable and complexes with cadmium to produce multimeric forms which are separable by gel filtration. Chemical analyses suggest that some amino acids are not joined by classical peptide linkages. This indicates that the synthesis of the peptide may not be directed by mRNA and that induction of its synthesis may not involve increased transcription from a putative gene corresponding directly to this peptide. A smaller proportion (greater than 15%) of the cellular cadmium is bound to a larger compound which is also heat stable and binds copper more readily than cadmium in vivo. This larger compound has an amino acid composition similar, in some respects, to metallothioneins.

This paper presents a model for viewing assessment from nine vantage points simultaneously. Each of these dimensions or 'parameters' is divided into sublevels. The power and usefulness of the resultant model stems from the variety of possible unique interactions among these dimensions and their sublevels. The model has the following useful properties: (a) it provides a multidimensional definition of several aspects of psychological assessment, (b) it serves as a checklist and guide for the criticism of existing psychological tests and measures, (c) it has potential heuristic value in the generation of new measures and tests, (d) it is flexible, in that new parameters may be added and sublevels changed to suit specific needs, and (e) it is presented visually as a spatial model, thus allowing the viewer a more 'concrete' appreciation of what are really theoretical interactions.

It was hypothesized that, since verbal and spatial ability seem to be lateralized (left for verbal, right for spatial), in any dichaptic task individuals with high spatial ability will do best with their left hands and those with high verbal ability best with their right hands. Conversely, scores with high spatial ability should make more errors with their right hands and highly verbal people more errors with their left hands. Some evidence was found to support these hypotheses for males, but for females the relationships seemed more complex. Possible explanations and implications of the findings are discussed.
