Self-induced photogenic epilepsy in infants.

We studied two infants with self-induced photogenic epilepsy and investigated their seizures with simultaneous EEG and videotape recording. A 2-year-old boy showed peculiar head-nodding behavior towards bright light before he manifested myoclonic absence or myoclonic seizures. A 14-month-old infant girl showed blinking in front of the television set before myoclonic jerks developed. Neither head nodding nor blinking was associated with paroxysmal discharges. We concluded that such preictal behavior was not part of the seizure.

Auditory brainstem response: a comparative study of ipsilateral versus contralateral recording in neurological disorders of children.

The auditory brain stem response (ABR) was studied in 103 normal and 90 neurologically abnormal children. The ABR was recorded simultaneously in Cz to the mastoid both ipsilateral and contralateral to the stimulated ear. A comparison between the ipsilateral and contralateral recording demonstrated that contralateral recording resulted in a small increase in the latency of peak V, whereas peak III showed a small latency reduction in the large majority of normal and neurologically abnormal children despite relatively large intersubject variability. There were some cases (cerebral palsy, infantile spasms) which demonstrated abnormal ABR only on contralateral recordings. Since most averaging systems have two channels, it is desirable to record the ABR simultaneously on bilateral recordings.

Intermediates in the conversion of prekeratin into keratin molecules in human epidermis.

In order to elucidate the relationship between prekeratin and keratin, we performed pulse-chase experiments using [35S]methionine (35S-Met) in vitro. Of 6 prekeratin molecules (49, 52, 55, 62, 69 and 71 kDa) that incorporated 35S-Met, the 55-kDa prekeratin incorporated the most 35S-Met. In 3 molecules (52, 55 and 62 kDa) incorporation was decreased at 30 min after being chased; however, incorporation of only two molecules (55 and 62 kDa) of the 6 prekeratins was increased at 60 min. From these results and our previous data, we conclude that the initial stage of processing is as follows: 3 prekeratin molecules (52, 55 and 62 kDa) are first cleaved in the N-terminal region, then two prekeratin molecules (55 and 69 kDa) are processed to intermediates (52 and 62 kDa) by some proteolytic enzyme(s).

The prognostic value of EEG in neonatal meningitis.

EEG recordings were made polygraphically in 29 newborn infants with meningitis. Visual and auditory evoked potentials, and CT scans were also obtained in some of them. The neonatal findings of these examinations were well correlated with the clinical outcome. Background EEG activity was a good prognostic tool but could not indicate the type of complications, although persistent abnormality correlated with severe brain damage or development of complications. The polygraphically recorded EEG was of great value to diagnose the apneic seizures often encountered in neonatal meningitis.
