[Evaluation for the regeneration efficiency of activated carbon by wet air oxidation].

It is well known that different regenerating techniques of activated carbon(AC) require the suitable evaluating methods for regeneration efficiency. In this paper, several methods for evaluating the regeneration efficiency of AC were compared and discussed by wet air oxidation(WAO) which were respectively based on different experimental protocols such as iodine value, molasses color adsorption, breckthrough profile, adsorption isotherm and standard reload experiment. The iodine value, molasses color adsorption and breckthrough profile yielded indefinitely PR values for WAO process, so they could not be applied to evaluate regeneration efficiency. And adsorption isotherm experiment was more correct because it compared isotherm loadings at the same equilibrium liquid phase concentrations, but this more laborious and time-consuming method was difficult to be widely used. The results also showed that the standard reload experiment was consequently picked out, easy to use and had high sensibility alternative to adsorption isotherm experiment. When controlling the WAO parameters at 250 degrees C, 0.6 MPa and 1 h, the regeneration efficiency arrived to 55%.

[Study on the relationship between methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene C677T mutation and coronary heart disease].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene C677T polymorphism is linked with coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS: Transmission/disequilibrium test(TDT), sib transmission/disequilibrium test(STDT), and sibship disequilibrium test(SDT) were used. Forty-five CHD pedigrees with at least one CHD patient in the first degree relatives of probands were recruited from Oct. 1998 to Feb. 1999. Among those recruited were 21, 2 and 22 pedigrees with the genotypes of both parents known, one parental genotype unknown and both unknown, respectively. MTHFR genotype was measured by PCR-RFLP technique. RESULTS: Neither the TDT for 23 nuclear families with at least one parental genotype known or the STDT and SDT for 40 sibships found significant difference between the transmitted and untransmitted MTHFR gene 677T allele distributions. CONCLUSION: The above results suggest that MTHFR gene 677T allele is probably not linked with CHD in Chinese population.

Role of tears in keratocyte loss after epithelial removal in mouse cornea.

PURPOSE: To study the role of tears in the death of keratocytes after epithelium removal in the mouse cornea. METHODS: In anesthetized mice, an approximately 1-mm circle of epithelium was removed from the center of the cornea, exposing the underlying stroma. In one group of animals, access of tears to the bare stroma was allowed-in vivo, by closing the eyelids, or ex vivo, by dropping tears from another animal onto the denuded stroma of an enucleated eyeball. In another group, tear access was denied-in vivo, by bathing the cornea continuously in saline or by keeping the lids open, or ex vivo, by rinsing the denuded cornea before incubating the enucleated eyeball. In a separate group, corneal epithelial debris from another mouse was placed on the bare stroma of an enucleated eyeball. The corneas were isolated, stained with a fluorescent nuclear dye, and observed en face in a wholemount preparation under a fluorescence microscope, to evaluate the distribution of intact nuclei across the entire depth of the stroma. RESULTS: Between 1.5 and 2 hours after exposure to tears, the nuclei of the anterior keratocytes under the area of epithelial debridement invariably degenerated. When they had been protected from the tears, however, no degeneration was observed. Epithelial debris applied on the bare stroma had no effect on the underlying keratocytes. CONCLUSIONS: Factors in tear fluid trigger keratocyte loss after removal of the epithelium in the mouse cornea.

[Ecological industrial garden: an ideal model of sustainable development].

There exist different kinds of views on the connotation of sustainable development of the society. In this paper, analysis from several aspects including certainty and necessity, the whole and the parts, development and limitation to the issue is given. Meanwhile, it can be shown from a summarized analysis to the models of sustainable development that the models consist of two kinds, theory one and practical one. A tentative plan of ecological industrial garden establishment in areas whose local conditions are permitted is put forward to promote its transformation rapidly from theory to practice, and it is regarded as a more perfect model for social sustainable development in the future.

[The preparation of human single chain Fv antibody specifically against hepatitis C virus NS3 antigen and its application in immunohistochemistry].

OBJECTIVE: Immunohistochemistry identification of human single chain Fv antibody (ScFv) against hepatitis C viral NS3 antigen. METHODS: The recombinant phages were panned by NS3 antigen which was coated on a microtiter plate, after five rounds of biopanning, 66 phage clones were identified specific to NS3 antigen. The affinity and specificity of ScFv were evaluated by ELISA, dot blot hybridization and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The data of ScFv-NS3 DNA digestion and DNA sequencing showed that the ScFv gene is composed of 747 bp. ELISA, dot blot hybridization and immunohistochemistry demonstrated that the human single chain Fv antibody against hepatitis C NS3 antigen has a specific combination character with hepatitis C virus NS3 antigen of different sources and paraffin-embedded patients tissues, it didn't react with liver tissue and HBsAg. CONCLUSION: The application of HCV NS3 specific ScFv in immunohistochemistry was successfully achieved.

[Structure and function of pancreatic microcirculation].

To gain an insight into the relationship between structure and function in pancreatic microcirculation, observations were carried out in 9 corpse, 30 monkeys, 24 dogs, 62 Wistar rats and 24 rabbits by the use of scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy with the technique of retaining microcirculatory dynamic and tissular information in the static specimens, and/or by intravital fluorescence microscopy with FITC-labeled erythrocytes. The results showed: there were two capillary beds destined for the endocrine and exocrine parts of pancreas between the intralobular arteriole and venule; the blood of pancreatic portal circulation flowed from the endocrine to the exocrine part; each pancreatic lobule was supplied by a single centrally located intralobular artery and there was no anastomosis between the intralobular arterioles or any of their branches, so they were end arteries; the physiological blood flow was about 1.18 +/- 0.05 nl/min per capillary with stable capillary perfusion pattern; a profound decreased functional capillary density and capillary perfusion was observed in the early phase of acute pancreatitis. These results suggest that pancreatic lobule is a structured and functional basic unit of pancreatic microcirculation, insulo-acinar portal circulation represents the basic feature of the pancreatic microcirculation, and the intralobular arteriole, being an end artery, forms the anatomical basis of the pancreatic microcirculatory disturbance during acute pancreatitis.

Abrogation of tumor necrosis factor-alpha converting enzyme inhibits embryonic lung morphogenesis in culture.

TNF-alpha converting enzyme (TACE)-mediated cell surface protein ectodomain cleavage constitutes an important cellular regulatory mechanism during mammalian lung development. Herein, we have found that TAPI, a synthetic inhibitor of TACE, inhibits embryonic mouse lung branching morphogenesis in culture. To further investigate the biological significance of TACE as a shedding enzyme during early lung organogenesis, we have devised an antisense oligonucleotide to specifically block endogenous TACE gene expression at both transcriptional and translational levels in embryonic mouse lung explant culture. Addition of TACE antisense oligonucleotide resulted in a concentration-dependent reduction in lung branching morphogenesis in culture, whereas both scrambled and sense control oligonucleotides showed no adverse effects on lung growth. Furthermore, both aquaporin-5 (Aqp5) and surfactant protein-C (SP-C) mRNA expression and protein immunoreactivity were significantly inhibited in cultured mouse lungs treated with TACE antisense oligonucleotide, indicating defective epithelial cell differentiation in embryonic lungs with decreased TACE expression. TACE is known to be involved in the proteolytic release of TGF-alpha, an EGF family stimuli critical for lung growth and maturation. We therefore tested the possibility that a lack of diffusable TGF-alpha, due to TACE deficiency, contributes to the inhibitory lung morphogenesis in the presence of TACE antisense oligonucleotide in lung culture. Soluble TGF-alpha, when included in the lung culture, rescued the TACE antisense oligonucleotide-treated lungs from inhibition of both lung branching morphogenesis and lung epithelial cell differentiation, suggesting an impaired release of circulating regulators necessary for lung development in the absence of TACE gene expression. Our findings provide evidence that TACE-mediated membrane protein shedding is indispensable for normal lung branching morphogenesis and cytodifferentiation, probably through regulating the availability of positive cytokines/growth factors essential for lung organogenesis such as TGF-alpha.

Arotinolol is a weak partial agonist on beta 3-adrenergic receptors in brown adipocytes.

Arotinolol, a clinically used alpha/beta-adrenergic blocker, has been demonstrated to be an anti-obesity agent. The anti-obesity effect of arotinolol was suggested to be the result of direct activation of thermogenesis in brown-fat cells. We tested the ability of arotinolol to stimulate thermogenesis (oxygen consumption) in isolated brown-fat cells and in intact animals. Arotinolol stimulated thermogenesis in brown-fat cells isolated from mouse and hamster. A relatively low sensitivity to the beta-adrenergic antagonist propranolol (pK(B) approximately 6) indicated that arotinolol interacted with the beta3-adrenergic receptor. On the beta3-receptor, arotinolol was a very weak (EC50 approximately 20 microM) and only partial (approximately 50%) agonist, but arotinolol also demonstrated the properties of being a beta3-receptor antagonist with a pK(B) of 5.7. In intact animals, only the antagonistic action of arotinolol could be observed. Because arotinolol is only a very weak and partial agonist on the beta3-receptors, direct stimulation of thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue is unlikely to be sufficient to cause significant weight loss. It may be necessary to invoke additional pathways to explain the anti-obesity effects of chronic treatment with arotinolol.

[CT appearance and its diagnosis value in liver cancer after transcatheter oily chemoembolization combining with high intensity focused ultrasound therapy].

OBJECTIVE: To study the CT appearances of liver cancer after transcatheter oily chemoembolization (TOCE) combining with high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy. METHODS: Fifty cases of clinically-proved liver cancer were included into this study. For each case, CT scanning before and after TOCE, HIFU treatment was performed. The volumes of the masses were measured. The appearances of the oily deposition and the density, shape, border of the lesions were observed. RESULTS: The lesions became smaller in 38 cases (38/50, 76%) after the treatment. The differences were detected statistically in the ratio of the tumor shrinkage between the single TOCE therapy and the combined treatment (P<0.05). The ratio of the tumor shrinkage was closely correlative with the quantity of the oily deposition, but not with the diameter of the tumor before treatment. The lowered densities were showed in 30 cases (30/50, 60%) and the borders became regular and clear in 16 cases after HIFU therapy. CONCLUSIONS: TOCE combining with HIFU therapy in the patients with liver cancer can make the tumor smaller. CT is of great value in the evaluation of efficacy and prognosis.

[Characteristics of N2O emissions from vegetal soils on Fildes peninsula, Antarctica].

The N2O fluxes from the vegetal soils were first measured on the Fildes peninsula, Antarctica, and the total N2O emission was also estimated in the summer 2 months. The daily variations of N2O fluxes appeared single-peak trend under the sunshine or rainy weather conditions but they were irregular under the snow weather conditions and inconsistent with the atmospheric temperatures. The seasonal variations of the N2O fluxes were affected by the temperature and rainfall. The conditions during the transitions between dry and wet seasons improved the N2O emission. The total N2O emissions from moss and lichen soils were 3.7152 kg and 2.5344 kg, respectively. It follows that the vegetal soils are the sources for the atmospheric N2O on the Fildes peninsula, Antarctica.

[Measurement of CO2 concentration in the areas with vegetation cover on the Fildes peninsula, Antarctica].

The average CO2 concentration was above 473.5 mg.m-3 in the areas covered by moss or lichen, greatly higher than the global average CO2 concentration, implying that these areas may be one of the atmospheric CO2 sources. Abnormally high CO2 concentration was relative with vegetal physiological and ecological characters. In the areas covered by moss, the daily variation of the CO2 concentrations was affected by sunshine and temperature and it was also different under the conditions of the different weathers. Sunshine was the main factors influencing the CO2 concentration. The seasonal variation of the CO2 concentration was negatively correlated with atmospheric temperature and positively with rainfall and air relative humidity. This article first presents the variations of CO2 concentration and its influential factors under the Antarctic environmental conditions, which also presents new information for the further study to the Antarctic greenhouse gases.

[Effect of anaerobic acidification treatment on nitrogen removal and toxicity reduction of coke plant wastewater].

Coke plant wastewater was treated by anaerobic acidification-anoxic-aerobic (A1-A2-O) biofilm process and anoxic-aerobic (A/O) biofilm process respectively. Toxicity reduction effects of the two processes were compared. The toxicity of coke plant wastewater was equal to that of mercury chloride with concentration of 0.19 mg/L. Its toxicity reduction was related to the removal of organic nitrogen. Anaerobic acidification unit acted an important role on removal of both organic nitrogen and reduction of toxicity of the wastewater. After treatment by A1-A2-O process, its toxicity can be decreased greatly. When HRT was 37.9 hours, The relative luminosity of the treated effluent to photobacterium can attain 96.8%, that is equal to the toxicity of mercury chloride with concentration of 0.023 mg/L.

Interleukin-6 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from patients with COPD.

OBJECTIVE: To obtain new insights into the behavior of Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and released from alveolar macrophages (AM) in chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), and reveal the relationship between IL-6 and the development of emphysema in COPD. METHODS: IL-6 in BALF and released by AM in BALF were examined in 7 non-smoking subjects and 21 patients with COPD. According to the 95% confidence limits of IL-6 in BALF from non-smoking subjects, the patients were divided into two groups: those who were within the limits were assigned to the first group, and those who were above the limits were assigned to the second group. RESULTS: The concentration of IL-6 released by AM was much higher in the second group than in the first one. Between the two groups, significant differences were found in pulmonary function. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the concentration of IL-6 released by AM may be related with pulmonary function, and IL-6 may play a role in the development of emphysema in patients with COPD.

[Nourishing characteristic of geochemical elements in Antarctic mosses and lichens].

Studies on the nourishing properties of geochemical elements in Antarctic mosses and lichens show that potassium and calcium were the most active elements, while phosphorous was accumulated in the middle part of lichen cells, and participated in organic synthesis. Mosses accumulated sulphur stressly, but took in iron and magnesium negatively. Aluminum and silicon were absorbed passively by lichens. It is concluded that potassium and calcium were the important nutrient elements for the growth of mosses and lichens, sulphur and phosphorous were the middle significant nutrients, while aluminum and silicon were the passively accumulated elements.

[Physiology and development of two Roegneria kamoji populations stressed by copper].

Roegneria kamoji grown copper tailings had weak stem, short height, and thick leave color, while its counterpart on normal soil was the opposite. Exposed to copper, R. kamoji had a decreased chlorophyll content. A certain concentration of copper could promote the seed germination of R. kamoji, and the extract of copper tailings did not decrease the seed germination rate, but deferred the germination. Root growth test indicated that when the concentration of copper was 0.125 mg.L-1, the rooting of R. kamoji was promoted. If the concentration was more than 0.25 mg.L-1, the rooting was inhibited significantly. R. kamoji colonized on normal soil wase more sensitive to copper than that on Cu-polluted soil.
