Use of antibodies to norepinephrine and epinephrine in immunohistochemistry.

Antibodies were raised in rabbits and sheep with antigens prepared by coupling NE or E to bovine serum albumin. Tissues were fixed with either 4% paraformaldehyde or 4% paraformaldehyde plus 0.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.1 M sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.3). Cryostat sections were stained by the indirect immunofluorescence technique. Two parenchymal cell types, representing the NE and E-storing cells, were observed in the adrenal medulla. In the central nervous system, fibers and perikarya could be visualized by the antiserum to the NE antigen. In the peripheral nervous system, NE immunoreactive fibers were demonstrated. There was no detectable cross reactivity of NE antibodies with regard to E and 5-HT. Cross reactivity of E antibodies to NE and 5-HT equally could not be demonstrated.

[An organ-preserving operation in primary ureteral cancer].

The authors report on a recidivation-free case of a ureter carcinoma operated by resection of the ureter and following plastics after Boari. The necessity of the revision of the nephro-ureterectomy which at present is already generally valid in the treatment of this disease is explained. The authors are of the opinion that the operation preserving the organ agrees with the principles of the carcinoma surgery also in cases of a tumour of the ureter.

[Ileal ureter replacement in retroperitoneal fibrosis. Case report].

A case of bilateral retroperitoneal fibrosis. Considering the presently used conservative and surgical treatment methods the early ileal uretersubstitution seems advisable. On review of the pertinent literature available no similar operative technique has been used for the treatment of retroperitoneal fibrosis.

[Use of Zatuchni-Andros score system on deliveries from breech presentation (author's transl)].

The Zatuchni-Andros score was applied to assessment of deliveries from breech presentation, between January 5th, 1973, and December 31st, 1976. Frequency of caesarean section was 28.3 per cent and perinatal mortality 0.44 per cent in 247 deliveries on term. The authors' experience and results were compared with literature data and supported the conclusion that the Zatuchni-Andros score was a reliable instrument of decision-making on the obstetric method that should be used in cases of breech presentation.

The hyperactive child. Should we be paying more attention?

Current literature on hyperactivity stresses the central role of short attention, distractibility, and impulsivity in contributing to the child's behavioral and learning difficulties. Less emphasis is presently placed on minor neurological abnormalities ("soft signs") and unproved theories of brain injury. There has also been a trend toward a more comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the problem in an attempt to meaningfully integrate medical and psychoeducational input. Professional awareness of the family's need for supportive counseling and the importance of appropriate educational placement for the hyperactive child has enhanced the effectiveness of intervention programs. Although stimulant medication has been clearly shown to favorably influence behavior ratings and measures of attention in hyperactive children, pharmacologic manipulation of deviant social behavior remains a very controversial subject.

[Comparative studies of placentar diffusion of propanidid (Sombrevin) and barbiturate in premature pregnancies and cesarean sections].

The placental diffusion and fetal elimination of propanidid (Sombrevin) and hexobarbituralnatrium adhibited for the introduction of narcosis in cases of prematures requiring caesarean section is studied by virtue of maternal, umbilical cord, and new-born blood samples. On the basis of the results we come to the conclusion that for the introduction of narcosis in prematures requiring caesarean section, Sombrevin seems to be more suitable than hexobarbituralnatrium, owing to the quicker propanidid elimination.

[Barbiturate determination in maternal as well as fetal serum during anesthesia of diabetic and non-diabetic pregnancies].

The rapid decrease of the hexobarbituralnatrium level is observed in the course of narcosis carried out on occasions of Caesarean section, when examining the development of the barbiturate blood level in the maternal, and umbilical blood taken at delivery, whilst in diabetic patients a delay and dragging tendency is observed in the decomposition rate of the hexobarbituralnatrium. The difference manifesting itself in the barbiturate elimination among diabetic and non-diabetic pregnancies, draws attention to the conscientious selection of drugs and doses employed in the course of narcosis during Caesarean section.

The fate of Staphylococcal exfoliatin in newborn and adult mice.

The distribution and excretion of the staphylococcal exfoliatin was investigated following in vivo administration of highly purified 125I-labelled exfoliatin fractions to adult and newborn mice. Adult mice excrete approximately one-third of a test dose by 3 hours as compared to a fifteenth of a test dose excreted by newborn mice. Accordingly, blood tracer radioactivity reaches a relatively higher peak and shows a slower decline in newborns than in adults. The urine of adult mice contains considerable biologically active exfoliating material. Both nephrectomized and carbon tetrachloride-poisoned adult mice injected with exfoliatin develop generalized exfoliation whereas comparable doses in untreated controls have no effect. On the other hand, subtotal hepatectomy, followed by injection of exfoliatin, does not lead to exfoliation. We conclude that renal immaturity is a critical factor responsible for the susceptibility of neonates to generalized staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome.
