Fatty acid composition of clinically healthy and malignant oral epithelium.

The fatty acid composition of epithelium from clinically healthy oral mucosa and or oral squamous cell carcinoma was analyzed by gas/liquid chromatography following extraction using a modified Folch technique and conversion of fatty acids to methyl esters. There were significant reductions in the relative proportions of palmitoleic and oleic acids and elevation of the relative proportions of palmitic, steric and arachidonic acids in samples from squamous cell carcinoma. These differences could reflect changes in cell membranes and/or fatty acid metabolism. Further studies are required to assess their functional, diagnostic and prognostic significance.

In vivo effects of Candida albicans products on rat oral epithelium.

Candida albicans has been associated with epithelial hyperplasia in some diseases of oral mucosa and skin but its etiologic role in these lesions is poorly understood. To test its ability to induce epithelial proliferation, the invasive hyphal form was cultured for 5 h and 23 h in chemically defined medium and yeast-free culture supernatants were injected below the buccal epithelium of young adult Sprague Dawley rats. The mitotic activity was assessed using the metaphase arrest technique 11 h and 31 h after supernatant injection. There was a significant increase in epithelial mitotic activity 31 h after injection with 5 h culture supernatants compared to control media indicating that the supernatants have an effect on epithelial cells, possibly by direct action on them.

Angiomyoma of the temporal region.

A case of angiomyoma of the temporal region is presented. Judging from the number of reported cases this is an uncommon site for the tumour to occur. The clinical and histopathological features of smooth muscle tumours of the superficial tissues of the head and neck are reviewed.

Fibrous histiocytoma of the larynx.

Fibrous histiocytoma is uncommon in the head and neck region and rare in the larynx. Its behaviour is unpredictable. A case is reported in a 54-year-old male which was treated conservatively initially and which recurred several times over a seven year period. During that time the appearances of the lesion changed from those of a densely collagenous, cytologically benign tumour to those of a richly cellular and potentially malignant neoplasm. Laryngectomy was eventually undertaken.

Fibrosarcoma of the ethmoid.

Fibrosarcoma may involve the ethmoid sinus by extension from the maxillary antrum or, more rarely, arise as a primary neoplasm. A case of a well differentiated primary fibrosarcoma of the ethmoid sinuses is reported which presented in a 24-year-old male. The tumour was treated by wide local resection. From a review of similar cases in the literature together with their treatment modalities and outcome, it is concluded that wide local resection is the treatment of choice.

Comparative study of the composition of primary and secondary dentine.

There is considerable variation in the composition of primary and secondary dentine. In general, secondary deposits, regardless of type, contain less calcium, phosphorous, and collagenous matrix per unit volume when compared to primary dentine. Fluoride levels show the reverse tendency. These observations suggest a more open, porotic structure for secondary deposits.

Quantitative exfoliative oral cytology in iron-deficiency and megaloblastic anemia.

A study was undertaken to ascertain if there were any morphometric or morphologic changes in exfoliated oral squames in either iron-deficiency or vitamin B12-deficiency states. The results revealed a significant (P less than .05) increase in nuclear area and a significant alteration in nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio in vitamin B12 deficiency; both returned to normal following replacement therapy. No changes were seen with iron deficiency anemia or non-vitamin B12 megaloblastic anemia. Ultrastructurally, the surface morphology showed similar features in all groups, with the plasma membrane forming complex folds (microplications) in three patterns: branching, parallel and network. The microplication widths and interplication distances were remarkably constant in both control and study groups, regardless of pattern.

Effects of cytotoxic chemotherapy on dental development.

A histological study of 21 teeth from 9 patients who had received cytotoxic chemotherapy for malignant disease showed increased prominence of incremental lines in the dentine. The number and distribution of these lines corresponded to periods of intravenous therapy and vincristine appeared to be the most likely cause. This effect was probably due to temporary disturbance of microtubular function in the odontoblasts resulting in decreased secretion of collagenous dentine matrix. Calcification appeared to be unaffected.

Effect of amphotericin B on human periodontal ligament cells cultured in vitro.

Three micrograms of amphotericin B/ml nutrient medium markedly inhibited the monolayer outgrowth of cells from explants of human periodontal ligament. Amphotericin B (1.5 microgram/ml) retarded outgrowth with morphological evidence of cell injury. The addition of 3 micrograms/ml amphotericin B to existing monolayers initially caused disruption of the majority of cells but those which survived then proliferated. Thus, routine use of amphotericin B is contra-indicated in tissue culture of human periodontal ligament.

Periostitis and osteitis associated with hyaline bodies.

Twenty four cases of periostitis and osteitis associated with hyaline bodies are reviewed. The condition primarily affects the premolar and molar region of the mandible in patients who wear dentures. It is suggested that exogenous foreign material, especially from leguminous food impacted into the tissues following tooth extraction, is involved in the pathogenesis of the lesions. In dentate patients there are several other routes by which such material could gain access to the deeper tissues.

A pigmented odontogenic keratocyst.

A pigmented odontogenic keratocyst arising in a white Caucasian female is reported. Melanocytes in the basal cell layer were identified by light and electron microscopy.

Histopathological and ultrastructural findings in a case of Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome.

Gingiva from a 3-year-old Iranian boy suffering from Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome was examined by light and electron microscopy. Deep pockets associated with predominantly Gram-negative plaque were present. The gingival lesion was dominated by plasma cells, many of which were degenerate. Russell bodies were a prominent feature. No defect of epithelium was detected.
