Fluorogestone acetate (vaginal sponge for 4 days) and PMSG (i.m. injection at the time of sponge insertion) treatment was administered to seven 3-month-old calves to induce superovulation. Samples of peripheral plasma were taken every 4 h during treatment (4 days) and then every 2 h for 7 days. FSH, LH, oestradiol and progesterone were measured by radioimmunoassays. In all calves oestradiol concentrations increased 24 h after PMSG injection and reached the highest levels (41-502 pg/ml) during the preovulatory surge of both gonadotropins. The surge of LH and FSH occurred from 12 to 22 h after cessation of treatment. The maximum levels of LH and FSH were 11-72 ng/ml and 23-40 ng/ml respectively and occurred within 4 h of each other. Between 40 and 68 h after the LH peak the concentrations of progesterone began to increase from basal values, reaching 24.0-101.7 ng/ml when the animals were killed. A quantitative relationship was found between plasma oestradiol concentration and the numbers of ovulating follicles. Progesterone levels seemed to be related to the numbers of corpora lutea and also to the numbers of unovulated follicles. Gonadotrophin output was not quantitatively related to ovarian activity or to steroid secretion.
Fifty cases from the literature and one personal case of cutaneous cholesterol embioli are reviewed. These emboli come from abdominal atheromatous aotitis, sometimes complicated by aneurysm. The cholesterol micro-embolism is sometices induced by vascular surgery or arterial opacification. Male prevalence (47 cases) is evident. Alone or with visceral involvement, cutaneous lesions frequently simulate periarteritis nodosa: circumscribed to abdomen, thighs, legs, dorsum of the feet, the livedo reticularis is the most stricking feature associated or not with cutaneous nodes, purple toes, ulcers and gangrene. Histopathologic study is required for diagnosis: showing "negative" pictures of cholesterol cristals in an obliterating arteriolitis. Nevertheless special intetest is focused on a macrophagic granuloma centered in the vessel.
The authors report a new case of polycystic liver associated with polycystic kidney. The functional disorder due to distension of the cysts led to surgery. The impossibility of carrying out removal of the liver, owing to the diffuse character of these lesions, led the authors to choose the method described by Tien Yu Lin in 1968. This seems to be indicated in a few cases owing to the remarkable functional results.

The authors report here a case of antral hemorrhagic gastritis without ulceration nor erosion, but with intravascular coagulation within the chorionic layer, which had a prolonged course in a patient with non-alcoholic cirrhosis, and which continued in spite of surgical cure of portal hypertension. The authors discuss various theories which might explain this hemorrhage and the development of localised intravascular coagulation, together with its relationship with the cirrhosis.
Massive ascites is are complication, but not exceptional, in pancreatitis. In a series of ten personal cases and a review of one hundred cases in the world literature, the authors attempt to define the main pathological and clinical characteristics of this disease and the best treatment. Ascites may follow abdominal trauma, involving the pancreas, sometimes it occurs during known chronic pancreatitis, often it is the first sign of pancreatic disease, whether acute or chronic. High levels of pancreatic enzymes in the ascitic fluid are the main factor in diagnosis of pancreatic ascites. The mechanism of formation of the ascites is loss of pancreatic fluid into the peritoneal cavity owing to a breach in the pancreas, the presence of enzyme-rich fluid, causing secondarily "chemical" peritonitis. Paracentesis abdominis or drainage of the fluid during exploratory laparotomy, permits one to obtain in certain cases, a cure of the ascites, but surgical drainage by an anastomosis between the pancreatic cyst and the digestive tract (pancreatico-digestive anastomosis), has the advantage of ensuring treatment of the ascites and of the responsible pancreatic disease.
