[Study of the liver by computerised tomography. Assessment of one years experience involving 1,480 investigations (author's transl)].

During a period of one year, and in two departments with identical equipment, 1,480 underwent examination of the liver by computerised tomography (C. T.). A critical analysis of the method is made, based upon the diagnostic results obtained as well as the errors and gaps noted. After describing the normal liver, the authors give the "C. T. appearances" of the main hepatic conditions, based upon correlation with macroscopic pathological findings.

Use of 99mTc-labeled albumin microspheres in cerebral vascular disease.

The intracarotid injection of radioalbumin microspheres (15 and 30 mum) is followed by scanning procedures that permit the description of the cerebral bloodflow distribution. The method is reproducible. Injection can be made into the internal and common carotid arteries, as well as into the aortic arch or the left ventricle. This last procedure makes it easy to examine patients with severe extracranial vascular stenosis or thrombosis and permits comparison of the two hemispheres. Most patients (88%) injected on the affected side showed one or more local vascular deficits. The method therefore is more efficient than pertechnetate scanning or arteriography.

Sigmoid kidney associated with renal adenocarcinoma.

A rare case of adenocarcinoma in a sigmoid kidney is reported. The literature is reviewed and the operative technique described. Preoperative arteriogram and cavogram are an essential part of the evaluation and provide aid in the surgical approach.

Effects of AMI-25 on liver vessels and tumors on T1-weighted turbo-field-echo images: implications for tumor characterization.

This study was devoted to tumor differentiation in liver MR T1-weighted imaging with superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO). Twenty-one patients with 40 liver lesions were studied at 1.5 T. Before and at least 45 minutes after SPIO administration, turbo-field-echo (TFE) T1-weighted, TFE T1 x T2*-weighted (MXT), and fat-suppressed turbo-spin-echo T2-weighted images were acquired. A quantitative analysis was performed blindly. On TFE T1-weighted images, the signal enhancement was -33% +/- 12 for the liver, -24% +/- 2 for adenomas and focal nodular hyperplasia, +60% +/- 33 for the hemangiomas; metastases and cyst enhancement were not significant. After SPIO on TFE T1-weighted images, the hemangioma-to-liver signal ratio (149% +/- 18) was definitely higher than the mean metastasis-to-liver signal ratio (90% +/- 16). This T1-related differentiation ability lacked dramatically on TFE MXT images and, in one case, was reduced on post-SPIO TFE T1-weighted images by a long imaging delay after SPIO administration (2 hours).
