Retractile mesenteritis involving the colon: barium enema, sonographic, and CT findings.

Retractile mesenteritis is a rare disorder characterized by either focal or diffuse thickening of the mesentery due to chronic inflammation and fibrosis. Six cases are reported in which stenosis of the colon, an uncommon complication of retractile mesenteritis, was the predominant radiologic finding. Diagnosis was suggested by the tapered, serrated appearance of the stenotic segment on barium enema complemented by the findings on sonography and CT.

A practical method to analyze the phospholipids in the amniotic fluid using HPTLC.

An operative method using HPTLC which makes possible the determination of nine phospholipids in the amniotic fluid individually is described: lysophosphatidylcholine, sphingomyelin, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidic acid and cardiolipine. Since a simple and reliable method for clinical practice was sought, the working techniques, materials, chromatographic solvents and staining reagents were chosen accordingly. The standardization method was made by using standard phospholipids. This method was tested with 34 samples of amniotic fluid. A discussion of the practical application in the determination of some ratios of fetal pulmonary maturity is made.

Captopril and bronchial reactivity.

In order to assess the effect of captopril on bronchial reactivity, 16 consecutive patients with asthma and hypertension were randomized in a double-blind crossover study, with increasing doses of placebo or captopril for 4 week periods. Forced expiratory flow (FEV1) and a dose-response curve with methacholine (PD20) were measured before and after treatment . Effective control of hypertension was achieved in all patients on captopril (P less than 0.05), while no changes in FEV1 and PD20 were observed. We conclude that captopril can be used as a first step in the treatment of asthmatic patients with hypertension.

[Intestinal invagination caused by a lymphangiolipoma].

We report a 11 year-old boy with ileo-ileal intussusception due to a pediculated tumor of the bowel wall. This lesion was found to be a lymphangiolipoma in which mature adipose cells were interspersed with dilated lymphatic ressels. Tumorectomy by enterotomy was curative. The ranty of this hamartomatous lesion is pointed out.

Treatment of exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. A comparative double-blind study with cotrimoxazole and cefadroxil.

A double-blind, randomized study was carried out in 40 chronic bronchitic patients, to evaluate the effectiveness of cefadroxil as compared with cotrimoxazole in the treatment of the exacerbation stage. The patients were in hospital while the study lasted and received cotrimoxazole at doses of 160 mg of trimethoprim and 800 mg of sulfamethoxazole twice a day, or cefadroxil 500 mg twice a day, for seven days. To evaluate the response the following parameters were used: clinical improvement, reduction in volume of sputum, reduction in purulence of the sputum and eradication of germs from the sputum. All the parameters improved in both groups of patients without any significant difference between the two types of treatment.

Amiodarone and pulmonary fibrosis.

Of 25 cases of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, confirmed by open chest lung biopsy between January 1979 and July 1981, 5 patients had been taking amiodarone in doses less than 600 mg daily for 1 to 6 years. No lung disease had been observed in any patient before the administration of amiodarone, and other drugs, factors and diseases thought to play a role in the causation of pulmonary fibrosis were ruled out. Two patients died of respiratory insufficiency, and only 1 does not now suffer from serious sequelae. Review of a further 5 cases reported in the literature and the present data suggest a causal link between administration of amiodarone and pulmonary fibrosis, and tend to indicate a hypersensitivity mechanism.

[Toxic pneumopathy following voluntary ingestion of 1 1/2 liters of gas-oil].

Authors recall an original observation about a twenty years old young girl who ingested one and half litre of gas-oil for suicide. A severe toxic lung disease appeared in the following days. Several weeks will be necessary for complete resorption, but no heavy breathing assistance will be needed. This observation confirmates the very rare cases described in publication.

A demonstration that 5-hydroxytryptamine administered peripherally can affect sexual behavior in male rats.

In the male rat, subcutaneous injections for 7 days of 20 mg/Kg B.W./day of 5-hydroxytryptamine creatinin sulphate (5-HT), caused remarkable inhibitory effects on sexual behavior. The mount and intromission latencies were increased in rats treated with 5-HT, whereas ejaculation latency in the few rats treated with 5-HT that it achieved, was similar to that obtained in control rats. The mount and intromission frequencies were decreased in the rats treated with 5-HT. The mean inter-intromission interval (MIII) and post-ejaculatory interval were prolonged in rats treated with 5-HT. These data provide evidence for the role of peripheral 5-HT in regulating sexual behavior of male rats.

[Delayed skin reaction in a group of 400 hospital patients: control study (author's transl)].

Delayed hypersensitivity skin tests were carried out with 5 antigens - PPD, staphylococcus, streptokinase/streptodornase, candida and trichophytin-in 400 hospital patients without any known causes for diminished delayed hypersensitivity. The degree of reactivity to each antigen was: PPD. 69.50%; candida 49.75%; streptokinase/streptodornase 44.50%; trichophytin 42.00%; staphylococcus 14.25%. Reactivity to either PPD or candida occurred in 86.50% of all cases. Positive response to streptokinase/streptodornase was present in 7%; which brings the total cases with reactions to one or more of the 3 antigens to 93.50%. Those who responded to trichophytin or staphylococcus were 3% only, bringing the total response of all cases to at least one antigen, to 96.5%.
