Hormonal and developmental specificities of transcription lie within a 1.5 kb region 5' to the ecdysone inducible Drosophila P1 gene.

P-element-mediated transformation was used to investigate 5' cis-acting regulatory sequences flanking the P1 gene of Drosophila melanogaster, which is selectively expressed in the fat body of late third instar larvae under the positive control of ecdysone. A hybrid gene was constructed by fusing a 1.5 kb DNA fragment directly adjacent to and including the first 25 transcribed bases of the P1 gene to the Escherichia coli xanthine guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (Ecogpt) gene itself linked at its 3' end to the SV40 t antigen splicing and polyadenylation sequences. Five transformed lines of D. melanogaster containing only one copy of the hybrid gene were established. In each of these lines the gpt sequence is transcribed with the same spatial, temporal and hormonal specificities as those of the P1 gene. This provides evidence that control elements essential for the ecdysone and developmentally regulated expression of P1 are located within a 1.5 kb region 5' to this gene.

[Bancroftian filariasis in French Polynesia. Epidemiologic status and perspectives after a 35-year preventive campaign].

The authors assess of three decades of struggle against Bancroftian filariasis in French Polynesia. Wuchereria bancrofti var. pacifica, aperiodic filaria, and Aedes polynesiensis, mosquito with high parasitologic output, set up a cycle very well adapted to the Polynesian environment; after numerous tests, the chemoprophylaxis with diethylcarbamazine (3 mg/kg/half-year) of all the exposed population has been decided, in association with methods of vector-control (use of predatory crustaceans). However, the achievement of this strategy is impeded by economical contingencies and the endemic comes up again particularly in areas close to eradication. Entomological clues show a high transmission over the greater part of French Polynesia.

[Behçet's disease in a 2-year-old girl].

The authors report a case of gangrenous stomatitis with lingual and anal ulcers and pericarditis in a 2-year-old girl. They propose the diagnosis of Behçet's syndrome for this patient despite the absence of uveitis.

[Study of a brucellosis epidemic in a horticultural school].

An epidemiological survey was conducted after the observation of 4 cases of acute brucellosis in an horticultural school. Of a total number of 215 attendants, eventually exposed to a single contamination, 65 cases of brucellosis were thus identified. The source of contamination was probably a practical lesson where the pupils studied a bovine gravid uterus. More stringent regulations are needed in order to avoid further similar epidemics.

[Extent of endemic yaws in Upper Volta in 1981].

This yaws investigation has been realized in the South West of Upper-Volta, in 1981, in areas around Gaoua, Niangoloko, N'Dorola; this investigation concerns 15 villages, chosen at random, and a sample of 1540 persons older than 4 years. The clinical prevalence (infectious cases) is 0.6%; the higher prevalence is observed around Gaoua (1.5%). Infectious contagious lesions are found especially in the 5-14 years old group. This investigation shows a low prevalence (under 5%) of active yaws. The serological prevalence (Kline-test) is 5.8% and we observe also around Gaoua the highest prevalence (8%). Periodical screening surveys of the population, during years 1952-1957, had shown a low prevalence of yaws, with a medium prevalence of yaws around Gaoua. Yaws treatment campaigns had been realized from 1957 to 1960 in South-West of Upper-Volta with very good results (prevalence: 0.06% - 1960). Now, in 1981, we note a resurgence of endemic foci, especially around Gaoua, from where the infection is spreading again, this, threatening the gains made by previous mass treatment campaigns. Taking in account the present result, it is necessary to treat contagious cases and contact sick persons (selective mass treatment or S.M.T., recommended in areas of low prevalence, by the WHO scientific group on treponemal infections).

[Sensitivity of Plasmodium falciparum to chloroquine in the hyperendemic malaria savannah zone of Burkina Faso ex-Upper Volta. Use of in vivo and in vitro tests. Demonstration of a resistant strain in vitro].

Studies on the response of P. falciparum to chloroquine was conducted in schools located in the environs of Koudougou (Burkina Faso, Upper-Volta), where malaria is meso to hyperendemic, using in vivo studies and in vitro macroculture tests. Cases were obtained from school children, semi-immune asymptomatic carriers, in the 7-12 years-group.

[Thoracic actinobacteriosis due to Actinomyces naeslundii].

The authors report the first case of thoracic actinomycosis due to Actinomyces Naeslundii. A precostal abscess with a large mediastinal and thoracic collection on CT scan was the presenting symptom. Evolution was favorable without sequelae after 6 weeks of Penicillin therapy (10.000.000 U/day).
