An 11-month-old female with Down's syndrome underwent successful primary total repair of tetralogy of Fallot associated with complete atrioventricular canal. She is the youngest reported survivor of total repair and supports the feasibility of early correction, rather than palliation, in this rare combination of congenital defects.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The atlanto-occipital (AO) joint is a true, innervated synovial joint with the potential to cause pain. METHODS: A detailed description of an AO joint injection technique is provided, as none was found on review of the literature. RESULTS: Using this technique, three illustrative cases provide preliminary evidence that intraarticular injection of the AO joint may have both diagnostic and therapeutic value for the treatment of upper cervical pain and headaches. CONCLUSIONS: Although AO joint injections may prove to be an effective adjunct to more traditional forms of conservative treatment, additional prospective studies are needed to better define the role of intraarticular AO joint injections in the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck pain.

In 1996, the English National Board held discussions with five focus groups of nursing and midwifery lectures with an interest in or responsibility for the development of research. The purpose of the groups was to explore the experiences of lecturers in colleges which had recently integrated with higher education institutions. The focus groups were asked particularly about their experiences in developing research expertise to meet their professional and academic needs, the demands of the research assessment exercise (RAE) and the NHS research and development (R&D) agenda.
