[Procedure for the recording of psychosocial relations in adolescence].

A procedure permitting more detailed recording of the complex pattern of mental processes involved in the formation of social relations between young people is presented. The content and structure of the procedure are explained and advice regarding the analysis of the result is given. Recording is based on describing external behaviour using four alternative forms of behaviour (aggressive, dominant, submissive and cooperative), motivational aspects by means of a list of motives and emotional background experiences for specific situations. The alternative forms of behaviour are more closely described, using initial results from studies involving 824 subjects.

Adenovirus E1a gene product expressed at high levels in Escherichia coli is functional.

The human type C adenovirus E1a 13S messenger RNA encodes a gene product, that positively regulates the transcription of viral genes and certain cellular genes and is involved in the transformation of primary mammalian cells. The E1a gene product was expressed at high levels in Escherichia coli. In a Xenopus oocyte microinjection assay, the purified Escherichia coli-produced protein activated the E1a-responsive adenovirus E3 promoter and functioned as efficiently as the E1a gene itself.

Platelets and fibrin strands during clot retraction.

The ultrastructure of platelet fibrin contacts (PFC) and the course of the strands was investigated in serial sections of retracted clots with the help of specimen tilting. We found after retraction in a test tube as well as under isometric conditions in the resonance thrombograph, after HARTERT, an uniform type of PFC. The side to side contact between platelet surface and fibrin strands displayed a 15 nm wide space which was bridged of 10 - 30 nm by filamentary structure. In each case the direction of the fibrin strands changed on contact with the platelet surface (bend). These bends recurred if the adhering strands ran over a longer distance on the platelet surface. The bends can be explained by non-directional movement of the platelets or of their pseudopodia. Microfilaments (actomyosin) which run straight in pseudopodia and often also twisted in the platelet body support this assumption. The described mechanism - contact of the thrombin activated platelets with fibrin strands and simultaneous nondirectional movement of the platelets which bind further sections of the adhering strands to their surface - would provide a more satisfactory explanation for the retraction of the clot to 1/10 of its original volume.

Twinning rates and seasonal changes in Görlitz, Germany, from 1611 to 1860.

Old-age twinning rates were evaluated over a period of 250 years (1611-1860), from 80,256 parish records of baptism in a church office in Görlitz, East Germany. Two periods with high and two periods with low twinning rates were observed. Twinning rates were relatively stable in spring and fall, but varied greatly in winter and summer.

Detection of lactoferrin and myeloperoxidase release from single neutrophils by a protein A plaque assay.

A haemolytic plaque assay was adopted to detect release of lactoferrin and myeloperoxidase (MPO) from single neutrophils. Target erythrocytes coated with protein A were bound as a monolayer by poly-L-lysine to the surface of a plastic dish. Secreted lactoferrin and MPO induced plaque formation dependent on the reaction with complement and specific antiserum producing lysis of the protein-A-coated sheep red blood cells. Lactoferrin was found to be released spontaneously from a fraction of neutrophils while MPO was released only after phagocytosis, reflecting different mechanisms for degranulation of MPO-containing azurophil and lactoferrin-containing specific granules.

[67gallium. Diagnostic possibilities and usefulness as a tracer].

As a consequence of its affinity to leukocytes and tumour cells, 67Gallium-Citrate is a good isotope for detecting infections and tumoral pathology. Its sensitivity is greater for lymphatic system malignancies, primary lung cancer, primary liver carcinoma and melanoma. It is a useful method with more sensitivity than diagnostic specificity.

[Indirect isotopic lymphography. Technic and clinical applications].

Interstitial lymphoscintigraphy is a diagnostic method useful in the staging and follow-up of several tumours as well as in the etiological evaluation of limb edema. It is a simple technique with minimal invasivity which can be performed even in those regions inaccesible to radiographic lymphography. Because of its great sensitivity and low specifity it requires careful interpretation.

[Early correction of the interrupted aortic arch].

Between 1974 and March 1983, 14 infants with interruption of the aortic arch (IAA), ventricular septal defect (VSD), and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) have been operated at our institution. In the beginning of our experience only palliative operations were performed, consisting in reconstruction of the aortic arch, closure of PDA and pulmonary artery banding (PBA). According to this procedure five patients were operated. Three of them died, the two survivors underwent successful closure of the VSD subsequently. Since 1979 the primary total correction, with repair of the extra- and intracardial anomalies in deep hypothermia and circulatory arrest, is the operation of choice. A total of nine patients underwent primary correction, in this latter group we observed two deaths only.
