Serial myocardial imaging using thallium Tl 201 was performed in the early follow-up of two patients with orthotopic cardiac transplantation. In one patient, non-homogeneous uptake, small defects and an irregular myocardial edge were observed during a moderately acute rejection crisis revealed by endomyocardial biopsy. The abnormal gammagraphic findings and histological changes were coincident and exhibited a parallel reversal. We emphasize the connection between these two events. The mechanisms which could explain these phenomena are discussed.
Experiments by Schiller et al. have suggested that non-directional edge-specific simple cells are constructed from two directionally selective subunits with opposite preferred direction. This hierarchical notion was based on the fact that the responses of such units to edges moving in opposite directions are spatially displaced with respect to each other. An alternative explanation of the observed response separation is the delay between the responses of the center and surround mechanisms at the retinal level. Measurements of the response separation as a function of stimulus speed support this explanation and argues against the hierarchical notion of Schiller et al.
A theory of early visual information processing proposed by Marr and co-workers suggests that simple cortical cells may be involved in the detection of zero crossing in the retinal output. We have tested this theory by using pairs of adjacent edges (staircases stimuli) and recording from edge-specific simple cells in cat striate cortex. The zero crossing hypothesis gives rise for such stimuli to non-obvious predictions that were generally confirmed by the experiment.

Initially the data bank, which serves for the follow-up organization and for scientific studies, is briefly introduced. Then the possible analyses are described. Two types of possible evaluations can be distinguished. For the first type of evaluation, a subprogram has to be developed for every topic. A great number of questions can be answered by assembling the subprograms. These evaluations mostly dispose of a direct access to the data bank, so that the information desired is immediately available. For the second type of evaluation, the features of a group of patients have been determined with the aid of the data bank and have been stored then. A simple questioning language allows the establishment of any condition limiting the patient groups and its transmission to a statistical program package. Some examples are given to describe the possibilities of the statistical program developed especially for medical studies which makes it possible to perform analyses according to the life table method, too.
In 42 patients complaints following therapy have been correlated to the pretherapeutic urodynamic findings and in 58 patients pre- and posttherapeutic urometric and X-ray findings have been compared independent from subjective result in oder to have objective parameters for the effectivity of conservative treatment of urinary incontinence. The best results could be achieved, if in the starting urometry the pressure transmission was bad and the dosing pressure of the urethra in rest adequate to the age. In analogy about identic urethral closing pressure in rest, but significant increase of the functional urethral length and a better pressure transmission in a sitting position could be found. Good results of conservative treatment on urge incontinence symptomatology could be derived from increasing bladder capacity and compliance. Against it a posttherapeutic increase of urinary incontinence signs by training-effects of exercise therapy has to be stated in the comparison of X-rays. Altogether the high rate of 63 per cent curing and 20 per cent improvement could not be detached sufficiently by urometric and radiography findings. This discrepancy has been discussed.
A patient with arsenic intoxication is reported, who presented with a variety of gastrointestinal and neurologic disturbances including unilateral facial nerve palsy and acute symptomatic pancreatitis, neither of which have been previously described as sequelae of arsenic poisoning. The patient also suffered hematologic, dermatologic, and cardiopulmonary complications. A review of the literature about this interesting problem is also presented.

It is well known, that the quality standards of the various pharmacopoeias are based on certain procedures of synthesis or preparation concerning the drugs. Altering the manufacturing methods or importing these drugs from different producers, it may arise that the examined substance will formally come up to the quality directions of the pharmacopoeia agreed upon, but will contain possible, critical contaminations which are beyond the pharmacopoeia directions of examinations.
