Evaluating the multicystic kidney.

The multicystic kidney is the most common renal mass in the newborn child. The entity represents 50-65% of all abdominal masses presenting during infancy. The use of Tc-99m-glucoheptonate renal imaging and ultrasonography has improved the diagnostic accuracy in this condition. Four patients with unilateral multicystic kidneys are discussed. The diagnostic and pathologic characteristics of the multicystic kidney are described.

Neonatal proximal femoral epiphysiolysis.

The authors pressent two cases of proximal femoral epiphysiolysis (PFE) in neonates. Radiographs show superolateral displacement of the proximal femoral metaphysis in relation to a normal acetabulum, which differentiates PFE from a congenital hip dislocation. Early diagnosis and treatment of PFE can prevent coxa vara.

Bacterial epididymo-orchitis in children and adolescents.

Five cases of bacterial epididymo-orchitis are presented. These patients demonstrate three distinct mechanisms of bacterial infection of the intrascrotal structures: epididymo-orchitis as a presentation and a complication of urinary tract infection; epididymo-orchitis associated with sexually transmitted disease; and epididymo-orchitis associated with systemic infection. We recommend urine, urethral, and blood bacterial cultures, in addition to viral serologic studies, as an appropriate evaluation for any patient with epididymo-orchitis.
