Evaluation of surfactant-like effects of commonly used remedies for colds.

Volatile aromatics, eucalyptol, eucalyptus oil, camphor and menthol were spread on synthetic DPL films and pulmonary surfactants; the initial surface pressure of the surfactants was measured and the additional surface pressure increment recorded. Eucalyptol was allowed to be inhaled by rabbits and lung compliance was monitored. Under our experimental conditions the volatile aromatics exhibited surfactant-like effects, namely a decrease in surface tension between water and air and thus improved lung compliance values in vivo.

[Utilization of Raoul Hoffman's Fixateur externe: indications and results].

In the Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallklinik Murnau (a Workmen's Association Emergency Hospital) 101 patients were treated with the Raoul Hoffmann-Fixateur externe. In patients with fresh bone fractures this system was very useful in cases with large soft tissue damages, with compound fractures and when the fractures were located very close to a joint. Good results were achieved also in the treatment of patients with pelvic fractures by using the Raoul Hoffmann-apparatus. In cases of old fractures no osteomyelitis occurred after introducing the nails and bone-screws of the Fixateur externe. Even with the Raoul Hoffmann-apparatus still in the bone physical therapy and the general care of the patient was easily possible. According to our experiences the Fixateur externe proved to be a valuable aid in traumatology besides the usage of plates and medullary nails.

The mechanical, enzymatic and morphological changes in acute pulmonary insufficiency following the production of a haematoma in rabbits.

The production of a haematoma in the hindleg of rabbits represents a simplification of post-traumatic models. The lungs, one of the target organs, show similar micromorphological alterations to those described in traumatised human beings. The lungs of rabbits, bearing a hindleg haematoma for 24 hr, showed a significantly increased incidence of micromorphological lung alterations compared to the control group. Moreover, measurement revealed a significantly decreased lung compliance within the haematoma groups. It was demonstrated that whether the haematoma was subcutaneous or intramuscular, similar alterations were seen in lung histology, and in lung compliance values. Studies on the activity of superoxide dismutase in lung tissue homogenates demonstrated a significant decrease in those rabbits having had a haematoma intramuscularly for 24 hr.

Microcirculation and blood volume in rats before and after spinal cord injury.

Blood flow, cardiac output, blood pressure, indicator mixing time and blood volume were measured in rats before and after spinal cord injury. After cutting off the spinal cord blood flow decreases markedly in the paraplegic area but also in the main organs of the animals. Only the blood supply of the lung increases by this manipulation. As blood volume and the blood pressure is decreased and the indicator mixing time delayed the situation of the spinal cord injury can be compared with the situation after acute blood loss. Therefore it is proposed to include circulatory disturbances into the conception of the acute spinal shock situation.

[An experimental study on the pathogenesis of the acute pulmonary insufficiency (author's transl)].

Parameters of the lungs as Compliance PaCO2, PaO2, have been measured in connection with experimental, pathophysiological insults like hematoma, bone marrow intravasation and hemorrhage, in rabbits. Concerning the compliance quotient, a statistically proved decrease was found within the groups, which have had a hematoma. Moreover, the histological picture of the lungs from rabbits with a hematom showed perivascular and intersitial edema and considerable atelectases. Serum of animals, which have had a hematom for at least 24 h has been fractionated by gel chromatography; low molecular weight substances of the fractionated serum were injected into healthy recipients. Thereafter, measurement of the centralvenous pressure suggests the appearance of substances, pharmacodynamic similar to 5-Hydroxytryptamin, in blood of rabbits with hematom.

[Physiotherapy of fractures in childhood (author's transl)].

Fractures in Children need physio-and ergotherapy as much as fractures in adults. Before the seventh year monitoring is of prime importance, because malpositioning of fractures is frequent. In children between 7 and 12 years of age physio- and ergotherapy are essential factors in rehabilitation. Massage and irradiation are noxious. Passive exercise of the elbow joint is not successful but causes new injuries. Fractures of the vertebral column or injuries of the spinal cord should receive only functional treatment. Later consequences cannot be assessed until growth has ceased.

[Scoring system for evaluation of severity and progress of chronic posttraumatic osteomyelitis (author's transl)].

From the anamnestic data of 50 patients suffering from chronic posttraumatic osteomyelitis a severity scoring system was developed, based on the duration of the disease, the time of hospitalization and the number of surgical interventions. The clinical course of 18 patients, undergoing an autovaccination treatment, was registered by another scoring system ("Munich-Murnau-Scale") regarding wound morphology, bone radiology and erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

[Chronic posttraumatic osteomyelitis. Attempt at oral autovaccine therapy].

18 patients suffering from chronic posttraumatic osteomyelitis were treated by oral autovaccination. 11 patients showed significant improvement of clinical condition. The therapeutic effect was evaluated by a scoring system considering the wound morphology, the bone radiology and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The most pronounced clinical improvements were observed in patients with established delayed type hypersensitivity against staphylococci.
