Study of the Gregory blood group in an English family.

An example of anti-Gy-a found during routine antenatal testing is the first recorded example in Europe to be described. Five other Gy(a-) siblings were found in the patient's family from whom blood donations were obtained in the event of a needed transfusion. Although anti-Gy-a was detected in the infant's serum, there was no evidence of haemolytic disease of the newborn, presumably due to the fact that the Gy-a antigen is poorly developed at birth.

Genetic control of lactate dehydrogenase formation in the hagfish Eptatretus stoutii.

The isozyme patterns of lactate dehydrogenases of various tissues were studied on 51 hagfish by starch-gel electrophoresis. Nine lactate dehydrogenase phenotypes were encountered, suggesting the coexistence of two alleles at each of the two separate gene loci. There apparently was no interaction between the products of these two separate loci. Even the products of two alleles at the same locus were apparently incapable of forming hybrid molecules, an indication of the possible monomeric nature of each lactate dehydrogenase molecule.

Sex-linkage of erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in two species of wild hares.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase specific to the erythrocytes of each of two wild hares found in Europe was discerned by starch-gel electrophoresis at pH 7.0 and pH 8.6. The single, sharp band of the dehydrogenase of Lepus europaeus was faster than that of L. timidus, at both pH levels. The sex-linkage of this enzyme was tested through reciprocal hybrids between the two species. Each male hybrid had a single band of enzyme identical with that of its mother, while both parental types of this enzyme coexisted in female hybrids. Thus, sex-linkage of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase has been suggested not only in man and in the family Equidae, but now in the family Leporidae of placental mammals as well.

Results of isoproterenol tilt table testing in monozygotic twins discordant for chronic fatigue syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is unknown. Neurally mediated hypotension (NMH) has been suggested as a common comorbid condition or a potential underlying cause. METHODS: We conducted a cotwin control study of 21 monozygotic twins who were discordant for CFS. One twin met the 1994 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria for CFS, and the other twin was healthy and denied chronic fatigue. The twins were selected from a volunteer twin registry in which at least 1 member reported persistent fatigue. As part of a 7-day clinical evaluation, all 21 twin pairs were evaluated with a 3-stage tilt table test with isoproterenol hydrochloride for the assessment of NMH. The presence of NMH was defined as syncope or presyncope associated with a decrease of 25 mm Hg in blood pressure and no associated increase in heart rate. RESULTS: A positive tilt table test result was observed in 4 twins with CFS (19%) and in 4 healthy twins (19%). This difference was not statistically significant (matched pair odds ratio, 1.0; 95% confidence interval, 0.2-5.4; P>.90). Compared with the healthy twins, the twins with CFS reported more severe symptoms of CFS and NMH both in the week before and during the tilt table test. CONCLUSIONS: These results do not support a major role for NMH in CFS. They highlight the importance of selecting well-matched control subjects, as well as the unique value of the monozygotic cotwin control design in the study of this illness. A specific antibody for cells with acquired B antigen.

An acquired B antigen, present on the red blood cells of a healthy male blood donor, was investigated. An anti-B typing serum which initially detected the weak antigen on the donor cells contained a separable antibody that was specific for cells with the acquired B antigen and did not react with normal group B cells. A similar, specific, immune antibody was produced in a rabbit by the injection of red blood cells with an acquired B antigen.

Serologic characteristics of H-deficient phenotypes among Chinese in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: The occasional presence of H-deficient red cells among both referred and donor blood samples prompted the mass screening of donated blood in Hong Kong for H-deficient phenotypes; 96 percent of the donors tested are Chinese from the southern province of Kwongtung. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Donor blood was screened for H-deficient red cells with the use of Ulex europaeus. Lewis phenotyping was carried out on all H-deficient individuals, and saliva testing was performed on most such individuals. The thermal amplitude and potency of their anti-H and anti-HI in the serum were also estimated. RESULTS: Between 1984 and 1993, 28 H-deficient blood donors were identified; 16 H-deficient patient samples were also identified, and family studies revealed an additional 7 H-deficient subjects. The H-deficient red cells did not react with anti-H lectin, the levels of ABH substances in saliva were normal or near-normal, normal levels of A or B transferase were found in plasma, minute quantities of A or B (in persons who were genetically group A or B) were detected on the red cells, and anti-H or anti-HI was detected in the serum (about 66.7% of which reacted at 37 degrees C). Atypical anti-A or anti-B was demonstrated in 81.8 percent of the cases. CONCLUSION: The H-deficient phenotype among the Hong Kong Chinese seems to represent a homogeneous group. Despite the presence of normal quantities of ABH substance in the saliva, anti-H or anti-HI that was active at 37 degrees C was detected in most cases. The incidence of the H-deficient phenotype was 1 in 15,620.

A new Miltenberger class detected by a second example of Anek type serum.

An incomplete IgG antibody, detected in compatibility testing, had the same specificity as Anek serum, a type serum of the Miltenberger complex. The cells of the donor represent a new Mi class, VIII, by sharing determinants found on cells of MiIV, VI and VII.

A role change for auxiliaries.

Development of a practice-based, self-contained community nursing team prompted consideration of how best to make use of available skill mix. This article describes an initiative involving training of the nursing auxiliary in the team to offer venepuncture to housebound patients.
