Quantitative analysis of EEG power spectra in experimental hepatic encephalopathy.

During galactosamine-induced acute liver failure in white male Wistar rats, EEG was recorded at regular intervals. Spectral analysis was done as described by Kropveld and co-workers in 1983. The specificity of the anomalies in the power-density spectra is tested by comparing the changing patterns with those caused by several pharmaceutical agents--ether, diazepam, pentobarbital. Quantification of the observed anomalies is discussed.

Argon laser treatment of pigment epithelial detachments and of subretinal neovascular membranes in Junius-Kuhnt's senile disciform macular degeneration. A prospective, randomized study.

Results of argon laser treatment of pigment epithelial detachments and of subretinal neovascular membranes in Junius-Kuhnt's senile disciform macular degeneration have been compared in a prospective, randomized investigation with the natural course of these affections. Of several hundred cases 26 eyes met our criteria for treatment. In control periods ranging from 1 to 3 years, six eyes with pigment epithelial detachments received laser treatment and seven served as controls; seven eyes with subretinal neovascular membranes received laser treatment and six served as controls. The results indicate that impairment of vision progresses more rapidly after argon laser treatment than when no such treatment is given.

IgE bound to mast cells in bronchial mucosa and skin in atopic subjects.

In immune reactions of the immediate type, IgE bound to the membrane of mast cells plays an important role. In 45 patients with allergy and 12 patients without allergy the IgE load on mast cells in bronchial mucosa and skin was measured by an immunofluorescent technique. In the allergic patients a positive score was found in 38 bronchial biopsies and 31 cutaneous biopsies. The difference is significant in favor of the positive score of the bronchus biopsy. A correlation between the titre of IgE, bound on mast cells and the number of mast cells was not found.

Intervillous space during uterine contractions in human subjects: an ultrasonic study.

Six patients at term were examined by ultrasound during uterine contractions. The length, thickness, and surface of the placental area were found to increase during uterine contraction compared to relaxation. The conclusion is drawn that during uterine contractions the intervillous space is distended. During uterine contraction more maternal blood is available for exchange with the fetal compartment.

Stress in elective dental treatment: epinephrine, norepinephrine, the VAS, and CDAS in four different procedures.

This study focuses on progressive stress during defined, elective dental treatments, expressed in VAS, CDAS, and catecholamine excretion in urine. Fourteen male patients had avoided dental treatment for years; all were classified as ASA risk score I. The different dental sessions were: first visit after many years; check-up (nonpainful and nontraumatic); drilling and restoring under local anesthetics; drilling and restoring without local anesthesia; and extractions. Urine collection was performed directly before and after the sessions to measure epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations. Anticipation stress was registered in the VAS, CDAS, and epinephrine excretion. Progressive stress was reflected in epinephrine increase, which discriminated between the different elective dental treatments.
