[Information value of the compartimental analysis of potassium metabolism for clinical medicine].

1. The special information value of the dynamic compartment analysis consists in functional evidence concerning the potassium metabolism. 2. Basis of the dynamic compartment analysis is an open central 3 compartment model. 3. The rate of metabolism which is determined by size of the pool and constant of speed is the most important parameter. 4. The mathematical modelling of the tracer course renders visible the compartmental effects of inflow and outflow of the speed constant. 5. Disturbances of the very quickly and quickly exchanging constituents of the potassium metabolism reflect themselves perhaps directly as a functional loss of the permanent and latent functional capacity of the organism.

[Congenital tracheal stenosis due to pulmonary artery sling (author's transl)].

Congenital stridor was observed in a newborn due to left pulmonary artery sling. Clinical signs and the course of the disease were determined by an extreme tracheal stenosis. In newborns and infants with apneic episodes, inspiratory and expiratory wheezing and cyanosis a pulmonary sling should be considered. Unilateral hyperexpansion of the lung and an anterior indentation of the esophagus are helpful diagnostic signs. Surgical treatment for pulmonary sling is possible but remains unsatisfactory. Patients with associated tracheobronchial stenosis show a high over-all mortality rate.

[Alimentary iodine deficiency in the Federal Republic of Germany (author's transl)].

Urinary iodine excretion of 1945 schoolchildren aged 13 to 15-years from 24 cities throughout the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) was measured. For comparison, urinary excretion of 5678 adults from 20 cities was calculated from the 24-hour radio-iodine uptake (RIU) by the method of Oddie. On the average the schoolchildren excreted 25.1 mug iodine per g creatinine: by WHO criteria this can be classified as a grade II iodine deficiency. There was a significant decline of urinary iodine excretion from North to South of the FRG. Urinary iodine excretion of children with thyroid enlargement (21.9 mug/g) was significantly less than that of normal children (26.1 mug/g creatinine; P less th that 0.0005). Urinary iodine excretion of adults averaged 25 to 35 mug/g creatinine, values calculated from RIU agreeing well with those determined chemically. Alimentary iodine intake was found to vary between 30 and 70 mug/d throughout the FRG, which is less than 30% of WHO recommended figures for optimal goitre prevention (150-200 mug iodine per day). Alimentary iodine deficiency has been demonstrated throughout the FRG, increasing from North to South in parallel with an increase in goitre rate. Goitre prevention through compulsory iodinization of salt is recommended.

Diaminobenzidine an electron donor to photosystem 1 and to photosystem 2 in chloroplasts.

1. 3,3'-Diaminobenzidine was shown to serve as an electron donor to photosystem 1 in the presence of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. In Tris-treated chloroplasts diaminobenzidine serves as an electron donor to photosystem 1 and to photosystem 2; the latter is sensitive to 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. 2. Addition of diaminobenzidine to Tris-treated chloroplasts causes an increase in fluorescence yield. 3. Diaminobenzidine-dependent electron transport mediated by photosystem 2 is coupled to synthesis of ATP even in the absence of an electron acceptor. This phosphorylation which is presumably supported by cyclic electron flow, is sensitive to 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. 4. Diaminobenzidine-dependent ATP formation, in Tris-treated chloroplasts exhibits the red-drop phenomenon. 5. The diaminobenzidine-induced cyclic photophosphorylation (mediated by photosystem 2) is resistant to a large extent to KCN-treatment which is known to inhibit reactions catalyzed by photosystem 1. On the other hand ATP formation supported by electron transport from diaminobenzidine to methyl viologen [in the presence of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea] is largely inhibited by KCN-treatment. This observation suggests that there are two coupling sites of ATP formation, one catalyzed by diaminobenzidine as a donor to photosystem 1 (in the presence of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea), and the other supported by diaminobenzidine which acts both as a donor to photosystem 2 (in Tris-treated chloroplasts) and as an acceptor (in its oxidized form) from a carrier located between the two photosystems.

[Measurement of mean pulmonary pressures and right systolic ventricular pressure by radiocardiography].

Computer exploitation of some parameters of the radiocardiogram and of the pressures measured by catheterization in a series of 678 subjects, studied both in Paris and in Prague, has made it possible to establish regression equations providing the rates of mean pulmonary arterial and wedge pressures together with the systolic right ventricular pressure on the basis of the radiocardiogram data. The latter was obtained by the conventional technique of the isotope dilution curves or by gamma-angiocardiography. Easy repetition of radiocardiography makes it an interesting investigation for the haemodynamic follow-up of the patients with heart disease.
