The frequency of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) has been studied in the sera and renal biopsies of 276 patients with various forms of glomerulonephritis (GN), the nephrotic syndrome and other nephropathies. Using a modified Hepanosticon method, HBs antigenemia was detected in 32 of 196 patients (16.3%) with immune complex (IC) GN and the nephrotic syndrome. Indirect immunofluorescence revealed HBsAg in 33 renal biopsy tissue specimens (16.8%). HBsAg was found in the sera of four of the 80 remaining patients with other renal diseases (5%), and in the renal biopsy tissues of another four (5%). Antibody against HBsAg could only be demonstrated in the serum of one glomerulonephritic patient. The sera of 18,799 normal blood donors were used as controls; of these 186 (0.99%) had positive tests for HBsAg. It is concluded that, in some patients with GN and the nephrotic syndrome, HBsAg-containing IC may be implicated in the development and/or progression of the disease.
23 adult patients with Schönlein-Henoch's syndrome were observed between 1965 and 1976. Nephropathy was noted in 18, gastrointestinal bleedings in 13, thrombosis of legs in 4, cases. Haemostasis was studied in the successive phases of the process on 185 occasions altogether. The studies included four different capillary tests, thromboelastography, the Gerendás coagulogram, determination of partial thromboplastin time and two platelet-function tests. Additional renal biopsy was performed in 10 cases, mesocolon and skin biopsy in one case each. The results of at least one of the capillary tests were found positive in each of the patients in some stage of the process. The coagulation status was marked by hyperocagulability either in itself or combined with laboratory signs of hypocoagulability. Immunohistological study of the biopsy specimens revealed glomerular fibrin deposits in 7 cases. On the evidence of the follow-up studies the laboratory tests may be used for the assessment of the activity of the process. The alternatives of local intravascular coagulation (LIC) or of compensated diffuse intravascular coagulation (DIC) are offered for the interpretation of hypercoagulability.

NE-monomethyl-lysine, NG-NG'-dimethyl-arginine, and NG-NG-dimethyl-arginine from tooth protein fractions were identified utilizing thin-layer chromatography, amino acid analysis, and gas chromatography. It is suggested that a relationship exists between the presence of these N-methylated basic amino acids and the resting stage of tooth tissue.
Direct carbachol stimulation of the intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus evokes an affective defense reaction in the cat. Pretreatment of the region with noradrenaline inhibited the reaction in a dose-related manner. Phenylephrine was ineffective in this respect while isoprenaline exhibited roughly the same inhibitory action as noradrenaline. The alpha-receptor blocking dihydroergotamine left the inhibitory effect of noradrenaline unaffected while the beta-receptor blocking propranolol abolished it. These findings suggest that the inhibitory effect of noradrenaline on the carbachol-induced thalamic emotional reaction is caused by its influence on beta-type adrenergic receptors. Since a similar adrenergic-cholinergic interaction was previously demonstrated also for the hypothalamus and red nucleus, it can be concluded that adrenergic modulation of cholinergic reactions in the central nervous sytem seems to be a principle of more general validity than has been assumed thus far.
In a task designed to separate perceptual processes from memory, 12-year-old children with reading disabilities showed no perceptual deficits as compared to their peers. However, they exhibited major deficiencies in memory skills for both labelable and nonlabelable visual information. Reading-disabled children in this age group appear to suffer from a basic information-processing deficiency.
The separation of rat T lymphocytes was investigated on anti-Ig--Ig columns. A simple and efficient method for the purification of rat Ig by precipitation of rat serum with sodium sulfate is presented. Protein binding characteristics of glass and plastic beads, as solid support of affinity columns, are described, as well as optimal parameters for coating beads with rat Ig (with BSA, ribonuclease and lysozyme, as comparison). Binding of Ig was primarily dependent on the concentration of the Ig solution. Maximal strong binding of Ig (6.2 X 10(3) molecules per micron2 of bead surface) was reached a 400 microng per ml concentration of purified Ig solution during 20 min of incubation. Higher concentrations increased only the amount of loosely bound Ig on the surface of beads whereas the amount of firmly bound Ig remained unchanged. Fractionation of lymphoid cell suspensions on anti-Ig--Ig affinity columns prepared at optimal conditions resulted in highly purified T-cell suspensions containing less than 1% of lymphocytes bearing surface Ig receptors.

A total of 3409 cadavers was studied for changes of the internal mammary artery; sclerosis stenosis and occlusion of the vessel were quite exceptional. This fact is believed to be of importance from the aspect of myocardial revascularization by mammary-coronary anastomosis. Anastomoses were performed on cadavers; the vessels 1.5 to 2.5 mm in diameter were easy to suture.
Authors describe a case of chronic aggressive hepatitis with persistent HBs (Australia) antigenaemia and nephrosis syndrome. The renal process microscbically appeared to be membranous glomerulonephritis. By immunofluorescent method antigen deposits IgG, IgM, C3 and HBs of the granular type have been revealed on the glomerular basal membranes. Deposits of the IgA were partially of granular, partially of linear type. Electronmicroscopically on the glomerular basale membrane subepithelial deposits were seen. The results of this study indicate that in the case reported diffuse membranus glomerulonephritis occurred due to HBs antigen-antibody immuno-deposits on the glomerular basal membrane.

A mutant of Escherichia coli K-12 carrying a deletion in the aroG-nadA region of the genome requires a high concentration of iron for growth. The strain is chromium sensitive, and in the presence of citrate lower concentrations of iron support cell growth. The deletion mutant lost a gene between aroG and nadA that is responsible for the uptake of iron.

The dehydrogenase activity of chorismate mutase-prephenate dehydrogenase, the allosteric enzyme of the tyrosine biosynthetic pathway in Escherichia coli, is inhibited by tRNA. The inhibitory effect of tRNA from E. coli is specific, other RNA species or polynucleotides have no inhibitory effect or only slightly influence the activity of the enzyme. While NAD only slightly influences the inhibitory effect of tRNA from E. coli, prephenic acid at high concentrations suppresses the inhibition. In he presence of a fixed concentration of NAD and low concentration or absence of prephenic acid the inhibitory effect of tRNA is time and temperature dependent. It seems that in the presence of tRNA and low concentration of prephenate the enzyme undergoes a time and temperature dependent conformational change. This process is reversible and can be influenced by the concentration of prephenic acid, the first precursor of the tyrosine biosynthetic pathway. The possible regulatory role of allosteric enzyme-tRNA complexes is discussed.
