Squamous cell carcinoma with anemone cell features.

A tumor from a 52-year-old Albino male had the ultrastructural features of an anemone cell tumor. Evidence of squamous differentiation was seen by electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. "Anemone cell" tumors have been shown to be classifiable as either carcinomas or lymphomas; the term therefore does not describe a discrete entity or constitute a definitive diagnosis. Treatment with radiotherapy was successful in this case, while chemotherapy appeared to have little effect.

The role of spatial complexity in the perception of speech and pure tones in dichotic listening.

Ear advantages for CV syllables were determined for 28 right-handed individuals in a target monitoring dichotic task. In addition, ear dominance for dichotically presented tones was determined when the frequency difference of the two tones was small compared to the center frequency and when the frequency difference of the tones was larger. On all three tasks, subjects provided subjective separability ratings as measures of the spatial complexity of the dichotic stimuli. The results indicated a robust right ear advantage (REA) for the CV syllables and a left ear dominance on the two tone tasks, with a significant shift toward right ear dominance when the frequency difference of the tones was large. Although separability ratings for the group data indicated an increase in the perceived spatial separation of the components of the tone complex across the two tone tasks, the separability judgment ratings and the ear dominance scores were not correlated for either tone task. A significant correlation, however, was evidenced between the laterality measure for speech and the judgment of separability, indicating that a REA of increased magnitude is associated with more clearly localized and spatially separate speech sounds. Finally, the dominance scores on the two tone tasks were uncorrelated with the laterality measures of the speech task, whereas the scores on the tone tasks were highly correlated. The results suggest that spatial complexity does play a role in the emergence of the REA for speech. However, the failure to find a relationship between speech and nonspeech tasks suggest that all perceptual asymmetries observed with dichotic stimuli cannot be accounted for by a single theoretical explanation.

The use of health diaries in the field of psychiatric illness in general practice.

The individual's response to the occurrence of symptoms is conditioned by a variety of non-medical factors, of both an enduring (e.g. personality attributes) and a changing nature (e.g. social support). The health diary provides a particularly appropriate method of studying the daily variations in health and illness behaviour which make up so much of the clinical content of general practice.

Asymmetric septal hypertrophy and hypothyroidism in children.

Any echocardiographic study of two children with hypothyroidism demonstrated the presence of asymmetric septal hypertrophy. One child died aged 11 months, and pronounced thickening of the interventricular septum was confirmed at necropsy. There was also hypertrophy of the left ventricular free wall. Histological examination showed only slight muscle fibre disarray, but there was striking vacuolation and hypertrophy of muscle fibres. In the second case, a child aged five years, the asymmetric septal hypertrophy disappeared after 18 months' treatment with L-thyroxine. Furthermore, other indices of myocardial function also returned to normal. The mechanism producing asymmetric septal hypertrophy in hypothyroidism is unknown. These are the youngest cases in which this association has been reported.

In vitro immunization of human lymphocytes. I. Production of human monoclonal antibodies against bombesin and tetanus toxoid.

A procedure for in vitro sensitization of human lymphocytes against bombesin conjugated to tetanus toxoid (BTT) is described. Bombesin is a tetradecapeptide associated with small cell lung carcinoma. We found that antibody responses against bombesin as well as tetanus toxoid could be generated in vitro by culturing nylon-separated human splenic lymphocytes for 6 days with lipopolysaccharide, phytohemagglutinin-activated lymphocyte supernatants, human AB serum, and bombesin conjugated to tetanus toxoid. Cells sensitized by this procedure were fused to murine myeloma cells, NS-1. The specificities of resulting hybrids were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunoassays and competitive inhibition experiments. Hybrids secreting anti-bombesin (IgM) or anti-tetanus toxoid (IgM or IgG) were obtained. The ratio of IgG to IgM antibodies against tetanus toxoid could be increased by using antigen coupled to Sepharose beads. The sensitization procedure described here offers a system for the study of antigenic stimulation of human B lymphocytes in vitro and for the production of human monoclonal antibodies with the desired specificities.

Ultrastructure of schizonts in the liver of cats with experimentally induced cytauxzoonosis.

Schizonts in the liver of 2 cats with cytauxzoonosis were studied by both light and electron microscopies. By light microscopy, the cytoplasm of macrophages in the sinusoids and small vascular channels contained schizonts with cytomeres or both cytomeres and mature merozoites. By electron microscopy, it was determined that schizogony occurred in 4 stages. The earliest stage was the presence of a multilobed structure containing finely granular protoplasm in the cytoplasm of the macrophage. The 2nd stage was an increase in height and number of the lobulations on the surface of the schizont. The 3rd stage involved the development of cytomeres and the appearance of a polar ring and rhoptries in everted sacculations on the cytomere membrane. Nuclei and mitochondria were incorporated into the sacculations before the release of mature merozoites into the host cell cytoplasm. In the last stage of schizogony, following massive merozoite formation and reduction in size of the schizont, residual nuclei divided by multiple fission. Each nuclear division became incorporated into a developing merozoite having preformed rhoptries, mitochondria, and a polar ring.
