In approximately 20% of the cases the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) is associated with primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT). In view of this frequent association, serum calcium and phosphorus levels should be measured in all patients with ZES. Conversely, all patients with HPT I accompanied or preceded by peptic ulcer and/or diarrhoea should have their gastric acid secretion and serum gastrin level measured. Since the association may reflect a type I multiple endocrine neoplasia (MENI), involvement of other endocrine systems, notably the pituitary gland, should be investigated in the patients and their family. A rise in basal plasma pancreatic polypeptide has been observed in about 50% of cases of familial MEN I (Wermer's syndrome) and appears to be a good index of pancreatic endocrine tumour. When ZES is associated with HPT I, the latter should be treated first for three reasons: (7) lethal acute hypercalcaemia may occur after abdominal surgery; (2) HPT I itself may increase the gastric acid secretion and hypergastrinaemia of the ZES, and (3) parathyroidectomy and medical treatment with gastric antisecretory drugs may postpone the need for total gastrectomy.

A mercurated DNA complementary to globin mRNA was prepared by the addition of mercurated poly(dC) tails to the 3'-end of the molecule using the enzyme terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase. The mercurated complementary DNA was retained efficiently on thiol-agarose from which it was eluted by 2-mercaptoethanol. Hybridization of the mercurated probe to globin mRNA led to a specific selection of the latter from a mixed population of RNA through hybrid retention on thiol-agarose. In some pilot experiments this technique was applied for the isolation of globin gene-specific pre-mRNA. Pulse-labeled RNA up to 3 X 10(6) MW was thus isolated with prominent peaks of 1.5 kb ('15 S'), 4.0 kb ('28 S') and up to about 10 kb. Electron microscopical analysis revealed pre-mRNA molecules of up to 1.2 mu (about 4.5 kb) in length isolated by hybridization to (Hg)cDNA; in control experiments, hybridization of this high MW RNA was competed out by highly purified globin mRNA. These data provide another indication for the existence of globin gene transcripts in the 10 kb range, i.e. transcripts larger than the about 1 500 nucleotides long '15 S' pre-mRNA, the substrate to final splicing. Such 'giant' transcripts can be interpreted as either the obligatory primary pre-mRNA or only facultative transcripts of the globin genes.
Isodenaturation of avian and mammalian DNA of Mr greater than 2.5 X 10(8) in 85% (vol/vol) formamide led to the observation by electron microscopy of A+T-rich zones ("AT-rich linkers") of 300-3000 base pairs which are distributed over the entire genome in a characteristic pattern. Linkers of mean length 800 base pairs are found either isolated or in clusters of about four to six linkers of more heterogeneous size separated on average by 2500 base pairs (in duck DNA). In between clusters, single linkers segment the DNA at distances of 10 to more than 100 kilobase pairs, with a majority in the range of 10-30 kilobase pairs. An analogous organization of linkers is found in rat and mouse DNA. The internal organization of the clusters varies, however, in a fashion that might be related to the large amount of light satellite DNA in the mouse and its apparent absence in rat and avian DNA. It is possible to fragment the DNA under appropriate conditions by the single-strand-specific nuclease S1 at the site of these A+T-rich zones and to obtain, on alkaline sucrose gradients, a bimodal pattern of DNA fragments of the size corresponding to the pattern observed by electron microscopy. The implications of this observation for DNA organization, chromatin structure, units of transcription and replication, and possible targets of A+T-specific drugs are discussed.
The respiratory effects of low levels of SO2 alone or associated with NO or NO2 were studied in rats exposed for periods of one day to thirteen weeks. Control rats were exposed to ambient air. Both control and treated rats appeared similarly active and grew uniformly. Erythrocytic variables (hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell counts, 2,3-DPG, glucose, lactate, methemoglobin) and oxyhemoglobin dissociation curves were determined at different times throughout exposure to the gaseous mixture. Blood variables of the exposed rats were not significantly different from those of controls, and hemoglobin affinity was not modified. Bronchiolar and tracheal epithelia were studied by scanning (TEM) to detect a possible loss of cilia. The alveolar walls were investigated by Light Microscopy and TEM after each period of exposure. No striking changes were observed in rat lung structures under Light Microscopy or TEM. Bronchiolar and tracheal epithelia were normally ciliated. No synergistic effects were produced by either SO2 + NO or SO2 + NO2.
Four DNA-dependent ATPases have been isolated from E. coli extracts. ATPases I and III, both sensitive to NEM, require denatured DNA but differ in their heat sensitivity, elution from DEAE-cellulose, and sedimentation coefficient. ATPases II and IV are both resistant to NEM. ATPase II requires partially denatured DNA, whereas ATPase IV can be stimulated by SS DNA. ATPase I is a DNA-unwinding enzyme; ATPase II may be involved in recombination.

The authors report the case of a 20 year-old young man with old rheumatic heart disease in whom suddenly occurred sero-fibrinous pleurisy with fever. The usual cause of pleurisy, e.g. tuberculosis, were eliminated. On the other hadn, there was considerable evidence, including lengthening of the P-R interval, and raised anti-streptolysin titer at 1920 units, which suggested recurrence of rheumatic fever. The relationship between this disease and sero-fibrinous pleurisy is then discussed.
