The effect of fasting on gallbladder opacification during oral cholecystography: a controlled study in normal volunteers.

The effect of fasting on gallbladder opacification during oral cholecystography was studied in 10 normal volunteers using 2 oral cholecystographic agents, iopanoic acid and sodium tryopanoate. Radiographs made 15 hours after ingestion of the contrast agents revealed good opacification of the gallbladder in all subjects when iopanoic acid was administered with a meal and when sodium tyropanoate was administered in the fasting state; in only 2 subjects when iopanoic acid was given in the fasting state; in 3 when given in the fasting state with ox bile; and in 3 when sodium tyropanoate was given with a meal.

Plasma concentrations of testosterone and LH in the male dog.

Blood samples were withdrawn every 20 min from 3 conscious intact and 2 castrated mature males during non-consecutive periods of 12 h during the light and dark phases of the lighting schedule (intact dogs) and of 11 h during the light period (castrated dogs). In the intact dogs testosterone concentrations ranged from 0.4 to 6.0 ng/ml over the 24-h period. LH concentrations varied from 0.2 to 12.0 ng/ml. In all animals, LH peaks were clearly followed, after about 50 min, by corresponding testosterone peaks, but no diurnal rhythm could be established. LH concentrations in the castrated dogs were high (9.8 +/- 2.7 (s.e.m.) ng/ml), and still showed an episodic pattern in spite of the undetectable plasma testosterone levels.

A study of plasma diazepam levels in mother and infant.

A 10 mg dose of diazepam was given intravenously to mothers at 15 to 205 minutes before delivery, and plasma diazepam concentrations were measured by gas-liquid chromatography in mothers and infants at delivery and again 24 hours later. The plasma levels in the infants were always significantly higher than in the mothers but there was no evidence to suggest that the newborn were unable to metabolize the drug. All infants had a good Apgar score at birth.

Multifocal candidiasis in a capuchin monkey (Cebus apella).

Candidiasis involving nasal, pharyngeal, and intestinal mucosal surfaces and a pharyngeal lymph node was demonstrated microscopically in a young adult female capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) experimentally infected with Schistosoma haematobium (Iran strain). Persistent nasal exudation and weight loss characterized the clinical disease preceding the animal's death.

Pethidine compared with pethidine-naloxone administered during labour. A study of analgesic treatment by a sequential method.

In a restricted sequential trial in healthy parturient women, the pain relief from pethidine 100 mg and pethidine 100 mg combined with naloxone 0.4 mg was compared. Pethidine alone gave better relief. The incidence of minor side-effects was high with both treatments but dizziness was reduced slightly by naloxone. It was concluded that naloxone antagonized the analgesia without abolishing the side-effects of pethidine.
