Immune complexes in the aqueous humor and serum.

The aqueous humor and serum of patients with various ocular diseases were analyzed for the occurrence of rheumatoid factor or immune complexes. Rheumatoid factor was detected by its direct agglutinating activity on IgG-coated particles (latex) and immune complexes were detected by their ability to inhibit exogenous rheumatoid factor or the subunit q of the first component of complement (Clq). Rheumatoid factor or inhibitory activity were found in the aqueous humor of nine of 11 patients with Fuchs' syndrome. In some patients who were examined two or three times, agglutination alternated with inhibition. Among 13 patients with endogeous uveitis, five had either agglutinating or inhibitory activities in their aqueous humor. The tests were also positive in the aqueous humor of three of seven patients with choroidal melanoma. A high titer of rheumatoid factor was found in the aqueous humor in an accidentally perforated eye that resulted in sympathetic ophthalmitis. No inhibitory or agglutinating activity was detected in the aqueous humor of 20 patients with senile immature cataract.

Electroretinography and temporal aspects in macular dystrophy.

In a family with cone-rod dystrophy of autosomal recess inheritance, the diagnosis was established by characteristic abnormalities of the ERG, which demonstrates cone responses reduced in amplitude and delayed in implicit time, and rod delayed implicit time in two sisters with macular degeneration. The abnormalities of the implicit time are seen also in two other sisters of the propositi, who are clinically normal. The hypothesis that they are only capable to transmit the gene defect to their offspring is advanced.

Quantitation of specific antibodies in the aqueous humor.

Six normal rabbits were injected intravitreally with bovine gamma-globulin (BGG). Quantitation of immunoglobulins A, M and G, in the aqueous and in the serum, was performed by the single radial immunodiffusion following the method described by MANCINI et. al. Concentration of anti-BGG antibodies was determined by the reversed Mancini method. The antibody quotient was calculated; it reached to 8 and 5.96 in the aqueous of the injected eyes 10 days after intravitreal injection, 22.69 and 24 days, 22.52 after 28 days and 14.93 after 31 days.

Retinal involvement in a case of nephronophthisis associated with liver fibrosis Senior-Boichis syndrome.

Electroretinographic and electroencephalographic studies were conducted in a 12-year-old boy with nephronophthisis, chronic hepatic fibrosis, mental retardation and tapetoretinal degeneration (Senior-Boichis syndrome). Markedly reduced ERG amplitudes and flat oscillatory potentials were found in the proband. Delayed scotopic implicit time and reduced amplitudes of the beta-wave were found in the mother's ERG. ERG may identify the carrier state of the Senior-Boichio syndrome.

[Transferrins in rabbit ocular fluids].

A study of transferrins in serum, aqueous humour, and vitreous in the rabbit suggests that the three proteins are immunologically identical. Electrophoretic and enzymatic analyses indicated that the serum and aqueous transferrin, as well as an important part of that of the vitreous, have two residues of sialic acid per molecule. The remainder of the vitreous transferrin contains little or no sialic acid. The transfferin level in the ocular media appears to depend partly on a local synthesis in the posterior segment; this is confirmed by a study of the specific activity of 125-I transferrin after intravenous injection of this labelled protein.

The effects of acetazolamide on the human electroretinogram.

The effects of acetazolamied on the cerebral circulation and metabolism was previously shown to be due to a raised PCO2 in brain tissue. The effects of the drug on the human electroretinogram (ERG) are investigated in fifteen human volunteer subjects. A significant increase in the b-wave was found. A similitude with the mechanism of acetazolamide administration in brain and retinal tissue seems to be a possible explanation.
