Human lateralization from head to foot: sex-related factors.

Sex differences in the pattern and maturation of lateral asymmetries of the human brain have been recently found by a number of investigators, suggesting that sex-related factors may differentially affect the two sides of the body. In this study, asymmetries in the size of the two feet were strongly related to sex and handedness, right-handed males having larger right feet and right-handed females having larger left feet, the reverse being seen in non-right-handed individuals. Since these differences were apparent even in children younger than 6 years, the fetal sex steroids may be critical in governing the maturation of both cerebral and pedal asymmetries.

Myocardial infarct in a child with systemic lupus erythematosus.

An unusual case of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a young child is reported with sudden death from myocardial infarction. The diagnosis of lupus erythematosus in this patient was made by renal biopsy at the age of 3 years. Atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries and aorta was found at autopsy with occlusion of the anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery. It is suggested that the vascular changes in this case were related to hypertriglyceridemia and prolonged prednisone therapy superimposed on a hypersensitivity vasculitis related to SLE.

[A new family with mutation of the structural gene of human ornithine carbamoyltransferase].

Studies of a child with hyperammonemia have demonstrated a deficiency in OCTase. The kinetic properties of the enzyme were studied and it could be shown that we have to deal with a new mutation which is different from the ones previously known. It is a mutation of the structural gene. The detection of a heterozygote is possible when the urinary orotic acid excretion is studied after a loading meal (2g of proteines per kilo of weight). A child with hyperammonaemia due to ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency is described. A new structural gene mutation is probable because the kinetic properties of the enzyme are different to previously described variants. The heterozygote could be detected by the measurement of the excretion of orotic acid in the urine following a protein load of 2 g/Kg.

Intrapulmonary steal complicating repair of tetralogy of Fallot.

A patient with total occlusion of the distal right pulmonary artery secondary to the performance of a Waterston shunt is reported. A nearly fatal intrapulmonary steal occurred at the time of corrective operation when an attempt was made to revascularize both pulmonary arteries.
