In normal rat, anaesthetized with pentobarbital, 5-HT, injected or perfused by intravenous route, provokes different types of cardiovascular responses. These variations are due to the activation of three classes of receptors. The first ones explain the fall of the arterial blood pressure: they are located on arterioles which are dilatated. The second one are para- or perivascular nervous receptors: when stimulated, they induce vago-vagal reflexes (Bezold-Jarisch reflexes) suppressed by vagotomy. The third ones are vasoconstrictor and located on arterioles.

The decline in arterial systemic blood pressure which follows the initial rise during i.v. perfusion of L-noradrenaline in normal rats has been compared with the same type of decline induced by metaraminol or phenylephrine, both alpha-sympathomimetic drugs (acute tolerance or escape). Vasoconstrictor activity of noradrenaline in shot i.v. injection is regularly decreased when acute tolerance develops. This hyposensitivity to NA indicates that a change in alpha-receptor affinity for circulating NA may explain the acute tolerance as well as the noradrenaline escape.

In the rat, silybine and Z 12007, a derivative of rutoside, increase the vasodepressive activities of arachidonic acid, a prostaglandin precursor. They reduce the activity of PGE2. Quercetine also increases the hypotensive action of arachidonic acid. These three flavonoids are supposed to increase the prostaglandin biosynthesis.
Normal man submitted to thermoneutral water immersion in horizontal position presents an increase in diuresis, natriuresis and creatininuria. Noradrenalinuria and adrenalinuria are reduced, indicating a decrease in orthosympathetic activity.
The urinary excretion of noradrenaline, adrenaline and creatinine has been studied in 22 normal young men during a sauna bath (20 minutes). The radio noradrenalinuria/creatinine is specifically increased, indicating a stimulation of the orthosympathetic system (19.6 ng.mg-1 +/- 7.9 in basal state; 30.5 +/- 15.7 in sauna bath).
The VH specificities of two rabbit antisera raised against the H chains of two human IgM cold agglutinins were studied with the aid of proteins on which the VH sequence data are available. They were found to recognize a new VH antigen (VHMar), which may represent a subgroup of VHI. This antigen is found on anti-Ii antibodies which have cross-reactive idiotypes. It is moderately well-expressed in normal gamma globulin and strongly expressed on 8% of unselected myeloma and macroglobulinaemia proteins. There is evidence to suggest that a proportion of the cross-reactive idiotypes among the anti-Ii antibodies involve this VH antigen.
