Unusual calcifications in a monkey's brain.

Symmetrical foci of calcification were found in both putamina of a baboon's brain. The deposits were related to capillaries and small arteries walls or distributed in the ground substance of the nervous tissue. Laser spectrography analysis disclosed accumulation of calcium, phosphorus, silicium, magnesium and copper. No iron cations were found in the deposits.

Prevalence of measles antibodies in patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis in Poland in the years 1971--1978.

Between 1971 and 1978, clinical centres in four provinces of Poland reported 107 cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). This series comprised 73.8% boys and 26.2% girls. Most children were aged 6--8 years, and 66% of them had had measles in the first two years of life. As compared with a control group the geometric means of the haemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies and neutralizing antibodies were between ten and twenty times higher in SSPE patients. Determinations of the levels of antibodies carried out several times during the disease showed a rise of the titres to values as high as 1 : 128,000 in the serum and 1 : 1,024 in the cerebrospinal fluid in some cases.

Detection of measles virus antigen(s) in peripheral lymphocytes from patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

Peripheral blood lymphocytes from 5 patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) were stimulated with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and analyzed for the presence of the measles virus antigen(s) by immunofluorescence (IF). For detection of viral antigen fluorescein-conjugated globulins from SSPE patients or from measles convalescents both with high anti-measles titer were used. Peripheral blood lymphocytes from 5 children with measles were used as a positive control. Measles virus antigen(s) were localized in PHA-transformed lymphocytes in all SSPE patients. The present results indicate that in SSPE measles-like virus infection may be found not only in the central nervous system, but also in the circulating lymphoid cells.

Laser-spectrographic analysis of the cation content in Fahr's syndrome.

The cation content and composition of mineral deposits in cerebral vessels in a case of Fahr's syndrome was studied by laser-spectrographic analysis. It was shown that in addition to Ca and Fe, other minerals such as Mg, Al, and Zn accumulated in pathologic deposits. The occurrence of cations other than Ca and Fe in these deposits had not been previously reported. The observations made in this study may contribute to a better understanding of the etiopathogenesis of Fahr's syndrome.
