Effect of a protein-free haemodialysate on tissue respiration and healing of burns.

Investigations were carried out in three groups of rats (10 rats per group) sustaining partial skin thickness burns covering 2.2 per cent of body surface area. Thirty minutes after burning animals received: Group I, 1 ml Solcoseryl, IP; Group II, 1 ml normal saline, IP; Group III, no treatment (controls). Two hours after burning tissue respiration and the tissue concentrations of potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium ions were measured in biopsies from the burn wounds. It was found that early post-burn administration of Solcoseryl significantly inhibited the secondary destructive processes and accelerated the regeneration of damaged tissue.

Output of peritoneal cells into peritoneal dialysate. Cytochemical and functional studies.

The quantitative and qualitative characteristics of cells in the peritoneal dialysate from 12 patients were examined. The number of cells in each subsequent fraction of dialysate decreased, while the differential cell count remained relatively constant for each individual patient. Macrophages, lymphocytes, granulocytes and occasionally mesothelial cells were observed. In 1 patient, plasmocytes were also found. Evident differences in cellularity and cell composition were noticed in dialysate obtained from different patients, especially in 2 patients with bacterial peritonitis there was a rise in cellularity with neutrophilia. Cytochemical (peroxidase, nonspecific esterase activity) and functional (phagocytosis, receptor expression) tests revealed that macrophages form a heterogeneous population of cells.

Nucleoli in peripheral blood lymphocytes of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia treated with cytostatic drugs.

Quantitative and morphological changes of the nucleoli in the lymphocytes were studied in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia treated with cyclophosphamide and vinblastine, and were compared with the lymphocytes of patients treated with leukeran and healthy subjects. The nucleolar index was 1.20 in the lymphocytes of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in stages II, III and IV of the disease, according to Rai's classification, and it showed no significant correlation with the mode and effect of treatment. The index was significantly higher than in the lymphocytes of healthy subjects (p less than 0.05). The activity of nucleoli in the lymphocytes of the patients treated with cyclophosphamide with vinblastine was significantly higher than in the leukeran-treated patients and healthy subjects, and it increased with progression of the disease and with successive passage from stage II to III and IV. In the patients in whom clinical improvement was achieved and the treatment with cytostatics was withdrawn, the proportion of active nucleoli in the lymphocytes was decreased.

Nucleoli of peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Morphological and cytochemical changes of the nuclei were investigated by the method of Smetana in peripheral blood lymphocytes of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia nontreated and treated with Leukeran. The material was divided into groups according to Rai. In the lymphocytes of the patients with nucleolar coefficient and the proportion of dense nucleoli and micronucleoli were increased, while at the same time, the proportion of ring-shaped nucleoli, the main form of nucleoli in the lymphocytes of healthy subjects, was decreased. The changes in the values of different nucleolar parameters indicated the successive stages of the diseases and served as an auxiliary distinctive feature of leukemic lymphocytes.

The nucleolus in various phases of growth of mouse lymphoma L5178Y cells in culture.

The number of nucleoli in cultures of murine lymphoblasts L5178Y was investigated. It was found that during the cell cycle the number of nucleoli changed significantly. Comparison of the course of the cell cycle phases measured by the rate of 3H-thymidine incorporation into DNA and the mitotic index suggests that lymphoblasts containing 2 nucleoli are characteristic of the peak of the S-phase, lymphoblasts with 1 nucleolus--for the G1 phase or the border G1/S, lymphoblasts with 3 or more nucleoli--for the phase preceding mitosis, presumably late S and G2.
