The authors studied effects of gamma radiation and submaximal physical exercise on G6P-DH activity in healthy men erythrocytes. Twelve men aged 20-22 were examined. They were loaded by physical exercise (at doses of 2 W/kg body weight) for 15 minutes. Erythrocytes were exposed to gamma radiation (500 Gy doses) from 60Co source. The activity of G6P-DH in erythrocytes was estimated by Boehringer-Mannheim test. Gamma radiation at 500 Gy dose was found to inhibit G6P-DH enzymatic activity in erythrocytes both at rest and after submaximal physical exercise. Furthermore, submaximal physical exercise was indicated to increase the G6P-DH activity in irradiated erythrocytes.
It is suggested that anomalies in Down's syndrome /DS/ erythrocyte /E/ features are due to accelerated E aging. This, in turn, can be conditioned by augmented free-radical exposure. Accelerated cell aging in DS may be the reason for immune system derangement.

Spin label studies of erythrocyte membranes from patients with Down's syndrome showed no differences in the rigidity of membrane lipids with respect to normal subjects and a tendency for alterations in the state of membrane proteins. Electron microscopic studies demonstrated the occurrence of ultrastructural defects in membranes from trisomics which can be due to accelerated red cell aging as similar alterations were found in the fraction of oldest (most dense) cells in normal subjects.

The sensitivity of human erythrocytes with normal and increased activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was compared under different types of oxidative stress. Red blood cells with increased SOD activity were more resistant to haemolysis induced by photoactivated riboflavin but no more resistant to radiation-induced haemolysis and acetylphenylhydrazine stress. These results indicate a negligible role of O(2) in mediation of the haemolytic action of ionizing radiation.

This paper presents the results of experiments on the in vitro effect of zinc ions on the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen and on the 2,3-DPG content of the red blood cells of healthy humans. Blood was incubated in 1.5 X 10(-3) M ZnSO4 solution for 4 h and then the oxygen affinity of hemoglobin and the hematocrit number were determined. An original method of determination the oxygen dissociation curve of HbO2 was employed enabling an exact calculation of the P50 value of the hemolysates by the method of least squares. Analysis of statistically verified results reveals that zinc ions increase the oxygen affinity of hemoglobin bringing about a leftward shift of the HbO2 dissociation curve (by 3.85 mm Hg for P50) the level of 2,3-DPG remaining constant in the red cells incubated with ZnSO4. The mechanisms of this phenomenon and its possible clinical implications are discussed.
The transferrin level was studied in patients with simple trisomy 21 and with Robertsonian unbalanced translocations 21/22 and 21/14. In all these groups of patients, known to have significantly lowered plasma iron levels, the transferrin levels were found to be decreased with respect to the control group.
