Dapsone-induced eosinophilic pneumonitis in a leprosy patient.

A leprosy patient with no prior history of respiratory complaints, developed symptoms of dry cough, fever and dyspnea after six weeks of therapy. Peripheral eosinophilia and radiological evidence of pulmonary interstitial infiltrates pointed towards the possibility of drug-induced eosinophilic pneumonitis. The results of relevant tests for other possible pathologies were normal. The resolution of symptoms without any intervention other than withdrawal of the drug and subsequent re-challenge proved dapsone to be the cause.

A study of the risk factor profile of cardiovascular diseases in rural Punjabi male patients.

One hundred rural Punjabi males (40-60 years old) admitted to Hero DMC Heart Institute, Ludhiana with first cardiac attack were studied to identify major determinants of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) among this group. The results revealed that 20% and 56% of the subjects were smokers and alcohol takers, respectively. Smoking had a significant (p< or =0.01) correlation with serum LDL-C, triglycerides and systolic blood pressure. 84% had sedentary life style. 36% and 7% of the subjects were overweight and obese. The body mass index was positively and significantly (p< or =0.01) correlated with serum triglycerides. 32% and 20% of the subjects had systolic and diastolic blood pressure above normal. 22% were diagnosed for hyperglycemia. 6% suffered from hypercholesterolemia and 28% had borderline high values of serum cholesterol. 22% and 6% had high triglyceride and LDL-C levels, respectively. The study concluded that the etiology of CVD is multifactorial and no single factor is an absolute cause among the rural Punjabi male patients. Therefore, desirable modification in diet and life style can significantly reduce the risk of CVD among rural males of Punjab.

Effect of dihydrotestosterone on ultrastructural changes in rhesus monkey spermatozoa.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) was given at 10, 100 or 1000 micrograms per day for 70 days to adult male rhesus monkeys. Spermatozoa, collected by electroejaculation on days 21, 41 and 71 of treatment, were processed for spermiogram and Transmission Electron Microscopy. DHT, at all doses increased the number of spermatozoa showing coiled tails and the degree of coiling as well as ultrastructural changes. In the 10 micrograms group, on day 20 of treatment coiling of sperm tail was seen while 100 micrograms DHT induced additional changes like displacement of midpiece, loosening of plasma membrane over head region and increase in electron density of acrosomal region. Similar changes were seen only on day 40 in animals treated with 100 micrograms DHT. By day 40 - 70 of treatment, spermiophagy by macrophages was seen in all groups.

Trabeculocyclostomy--a new modified filtering surgery for primary simple glaucoma.

A new modified 'INTERNAL' filtering surgery, Trabeculocyclostomy (TC) is described in 24 eyes of Primary open angle glaucoma. The importance of controlled drainage of aqueous into the suprachoroidal space and its absorption by the well vascularised choroidal tissue is highlighted. Out of the 24 eyes operated by this technique, in 20 eyes (83.3%) no further treatment was required for a mean follow up period of 18 months. In majority of the cases i.e. 19 eyes the anterior chamber reformed from the first day itself and remained so throughout the follow up period. With this in mind Trabeculocyclostomy may be a valuable procedure in cases of pseudophakic glaucoma (usually pre-existent) especially where an anterior chamber intraocular lens implantation has been done or is being done as a combined procedure. Minimum complications have been encountered to date.
