Mucopeptides isolated from Streptococcus bovis cell walls were found to be composed of alanine, glutamic acid, lysine, and threonine in a mole ratio of 3:1:1:1. A dipeptide, N(epsilon)-lysylthreonine, was isolated from S. bovis mucopeptide by ion-exchange chromatography. This finding suggests that threonine is associated with the bridge which cross-links adjacent tetrapeptides by connecting the epsilon-amino group of lysine of one tetrapeptide to the carboxyl group of d-alanine of another to form the mucopeptide matrix.

The present study investigated whether or not those who self-report increasing use of caffeine when under stress consume caffeine more for the drug (e.g., stimulant) effects. A three-part questionnaire assessing demographic information, caffeine use patterns, and reasons for use was completed by 182 females and 106 males (mean age, 22.4 years; range, 9 to 59). Consistent with earlier research, nearly 50% of the sample reported increasing consumption of coffee or soft drinks when under stress. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed drinking for relief reasons as the most consistent predictor for altering caffeine use when under stress. Understanding differences in use patterns will likely help strengthen the ability to describe the extent to which caffeine use contributes to cardiovascular and other disorders.
Reading activities of registered nurses (RNs) were investigated using an untreated comparison group design study. The study group consisted of RN students (N = 60) enrolled in a baccalaureate in nursing (BSN) program at four distance education sites in northeast and central Texas who were queried about their reading activities. Total reading time of professional literature was reported at the time they started the nursing sequence of courses in their baccalaureate nursing program and 6 months after completion of these courses. The purposes of reading various types of professional literature also were identified by asking the respondent's interest, the perceived amount of application, and the commitment to reading this literature. RN counterparts at worksites of the RN-BSN students (N = 67) were respondents in the comparison group. After completing the BSN program, these nurses showed more interest in and commitment to reading and were more concerned about applying knowledge gained from reading in their nursing practice.

Thirty-eight cases of human infection with the recently described dermatophyte species Trichophyton raubitschekii were studied and a description is presented of the clinical and epidemiological features of infection with this organism. Results revealed the usual preponderance of males (2:1) but a high proportion of individuals of Asian origin (60.5%) in the infected population. Tinea corporis, tinea cruris and tinea pedis were the most common infections. T. raubitschekii differed significantly from the more common Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes in being more strongly associated with tinea corporis. Some T. raubitschekii infections produced inflammatory lesions while others clinically resembled those caused by the related species T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes. T. raubitschekii could be distinguished from related species by means of special mycological procedures in the laboratory.
