Post-traumatic reactive and resorptive lesions of the medial end of the clavicle.

Three soldiers presented with a painful swelling of the sternoclavicular area. Computed tomography (CT) studies showed sclerosis as well as lysis of the medial end of the clavicle with adjacent soft-tissue swelling. Bone biopsy revealed new bone formation and inflammatory reaction; cultures were negative, no tumor cells were found. The patients recovered after antibiotic treatment. Although the CT findings cannot completely rule out a malignant lesion, these changes in the medial end of the clavicle in young people may suggest trauma as the etiology.

Basal membrane labyrinths in the healing stages of chick nutritional encephalopathy.

Chicks were fed a diet rich in oxidized oil and deficient in alpha-tocopherol. As soon as nutritional encephalopathy developed the animals were immediately put on to a normal diet, and kept alive for up to 166 days. Examination of the cerebellum showed multiple foci of healed encephalomalacia with EM appearance of basal membrane labyrinths between astroglial cells and around blood vessels. The possible origin of the basement membrane material in this conditions was considered and compared with similar formations in normal animals, in CNS tumour explants, and after portocaval anastomosis as well as after spinal cord lesions.

Perigraft lipid accumulation with unusual complications in a hyperlipidemic patient.

A 50-year-old man with hyperlipidemia, on long-term clofibrate therapy, 2 g/day, developed a series of unusual complications after insertion of a Dacron bifurcation graft from the aorta to the right popliteal and left femoral arteries. There were false aneurysms at all graft-to-artery suture lines, and a clinical picture of peripheral cholesterol emboli developed. At operation, a lipid accumulation under pressure was found between the graft and the perigraft adventitia. The perigraft adventitia later ruptured and a psoas muscle xanthomatous inflammatory mass developed, causing an acute abdomen; a second operation was performed. The mechanism of formation of the perigraft lipid accumulation and the relationship of this unusual sequence of complications to the hyperlipidemia or its treatment with clofibrate are discussed.

Imprint cytology in the intraoperative diagnosis of malignant melanoma.

Imprints were prepared from 73 pigmented skin lesions, 19 of which were diagnosed as malignant melanoma. The cytologic findings in malignant melanoma, large clusters of cells with loss of cellular cohesiveness and large pleomorphic nuclei, were positive in 17 of the 19 cases. In other malignant and benign pigmented lesions the few cells adherent to the glass showed characteristic cytologic features of the particular lesion. Imprint cytology seems to be a valuable adjunct to the examination of frozen sections for the intraoperative diagnosis of malignant melanoma.

Localized eosinophilic fasciitis in a child.

An 8-yr-old girl is described who developed eosinophilic fasciitis in the left arm from the shoulder down to the tips of the fingers, after extreme effort. The clinical and histological appearance were typical and so was the benign outcome, but the age was unusual and the localized asymmetrical distribution was outstanding and has not been described before.
