Vaginal smear cytology and hormonal tests were conducted in eleven patients in the natural menopause, before and after treatment with one capsule (100 mg) daily of veralipride alone for 20 days. Maturation of the vaginal epithelial cells unrelated to the degree of post-menopausal atrophy present was observed, without modification in plasma levels of gonadotropic LH, FSH and ovarian E2, E3 levels.

The distribution of fibronectin was studied in normal human breast tissue and in breast tumors. In normal tissues and in benign tumors, fibronectin was present in basal laminae and on the cellular surfaces of myoepithelial and secretory cells. A partial loss of (pericellular) fibronectin was seen in atypical dystrophies, and a complete disappearance of pericellular and basement membrane-bound fibronectin was observed in invasive adenocarcinoma.
Seven cases of cystadenoma of the pancreas were examined in detail histologically and histochemically and two variants were identified: a microcyst type lined by glycogen-rich cuboidal epithelium which also secretes some neutral mucins; and macrocystic type lined exclusively by mucus-secreting columnar cells which secrete predominantly sulphated acidic mucins with some neutral mucins. Electron microscopy of two cases of the microcystic variant showed neoplastic cells with an ultrastructure comparable to that of centroacinar cells of the normal exocrine pancreas.
A patient is reported with chronic abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and associated radiological and endoscopic abnormalities of the sigmoid colon. Light and electron microscopic study of colorectal mucosa showed abnormal collagenous thickening of the subepithelial basement membrane. The authors felt that the clinical and morphological features justified a diagnosis of collagenous colitis. Review of the literature suggested that collagenous colitis was still an unrecognised entity.
Sections of a nongravid adult female Dirofilaria, probably D. repens, were found within a subcutaneous nodule excised from the breast of a 45-year-old Frenchwoman. This is the 29th case of D. repens in man in France and the first in which the parasite was located in the breast. The patient apparently acquired the infection while vacationing in the southeastern Mediterranean region of the country.
The presence of cholinergic nerve fibers is studied in 30 suction rectal biopsy specimens from 5 days to 7 years old children. An increase in numbers and size of cholinergic fibers in the lamina propria and muscularis mucosae and absence of submucosa ganglion cells are related to 7 Hirschsprung's diseases. In the neonates acetylcholinesterase activity may not be strong enough to stain cholinergic fibers and makes the diagnosis more difficult.
Distribution of fibronectin (FN), a major glycoproteic component of extracellular matrix was studied by an indirect immuno-fluorescence technique using a rabbit anti-FN serum on frozen sections of fresh human tissues. In the extracellular matrix, FN is localized in epithelial and glandular basement membranes (bronchial, digestive, urothelial, prostatic, thyroid and mammary glands). FN is also visualized in vascular basement membranes and pulmonary alveolar basal laminae. In lymphoid tissues. In the liver and adrenal cortex, FN has the same distribution as reticulin fibers. In the kidney, glomerular mesangium in labeled. There are also pericellular labelings on fibroblastic and muscular cell surfaces. Epithelial cells of the mammary gland show a pericellular positive staining. FN is principally involved in cell orientation and in cell extra-cellular matrix interactions.
A culture system of rat pleural mesothelial cells has been developed for short-term experiments and long-term maintenance. In short-term experiments, endocytosis of chrysotile fibres (100 microgram/ml) has been demonstrated by electron microscopy of the pleura in situ. Structural modifications, mainly cytoplasmic vacuolization, were observed when the cells were cultured with sublethal doses of chrysotile (0.5, 1, 2 and 10 micrograms/ml). Untreated cells had a mean population doubling time of 37 hours. When the cells were treated with 2 or 10 micrograms/ml, the mean population doubling time was slightly increased.

Polymeric elastin was isolated and chemically characterized from 34 human breast cancers. There exists a good correlation between the histological and biochemical determinations of elastin; the breast cancer elastin resembles the other elastins isolated from ligamentum nuchae or aorta. Meanwhile it differs by its lower proline content and by its degree of crosslinking as determined by the ratio (Des + IDes/4)Lys. An elastinolytic activity (elastase) was found in human breast cancer extracts. This activity increased with the elastin content of the tumors.
