Androgenic granulosa cell tumor of the ovary: in vivo hormonal studies.
Androgenic granulosa cell tumors of the ovary are rare and have not been well studied hormonally. A 20-year-old woman complaining of secondary amenorrhea with high plasma testosterone (295 ng/dl) and a right ovarian tumor was studied. Plasma testosterone levels decreased after two days of dexamethasone (36 ng/dl), increased after hCG administration (538 ng/dl) and a unilateral right ovarian gradient of testosterone was noted at the selective catheterization of ovarian veins. After removal of the granulosa cell tumor, testosterone concentration returned to normal (68 ng/dl) and the patient had resumption of normal menses.

[Value of the basophil stimulation test in the diagnosis of juvenile bronchial asthma].
The diagnostic value of histamine liberation from basophil granulocytes (BST) was investigated in asthmatic children with house dust, house dust mite or moulds allergy. BST corresponded at about 80% to skin prick test (PRICK) and radio-allergo-sorbens test (RAST) in 178 patients. The relevance of the results of BST, PRICK and RAST for the asthmatic symptoms was proved by bronchial provocation in 77 children. BST corresponded clearly better to the inhalation test than PRICK and RAST. Correspondence of BST in house dust mite allergy amounted to 94%, in house dust allergy to 100%, and in moulds allergy to 77%. Overall correspondence of BST was 92%. Even when RAST and PRICK showed different results correspondence of BST attained 91%. In cases with identical results of BST, PRICK and RAST the bronchial provocation test corresponded in 98%. It is concluded, that if history fits to BST, RAST and PRICK bronchial provocation is no longer essential for the diagnosis of relevant allergens in perennial childhood asthma. This seems to hold also in cases of house dust or house dust mite allergy, where the result of PRICK or RAST is different. Especially in childhood the use of BST in the diagnostic procedure provides the following advantages: risks of bronchial provocation and the necessary hospitalisation can be avoided, cooperation of the patient is not needed, and costs can be reduced.

Ischemic brain edema with and without reperfusion: an experimental study in gerbils.
Tissue water and rCBF from the same area of brain was measured in gerbils with cerebral ischemia. In one experiment we related the severity of ischemia that developed after one hour of carotid occlusion to the amount of edema which formed. In a second experiment brain made ischemic for one hour was reperfused for one hour to assess the effect of reperfusion of ischemic tissue upon edema formation. We identified a critical threshold (10-14 ml X 100g-1 min-1) for the reversibility of the ischemic process, above which edema can resolve upon reperfusion. When postocclusion rCBF was less than 10 ml X 100g-1 min-1, edema was maximal at the end of occlusion and did not resolve with reperfusion. Autoregulation was preserved in ischemic tissue in which the edema process resolved with reperfusion.
[Determination of prolactin].
Prolactin is a pituitary stimulating hormone which is capable of inducing and maintaining lactation. The recent introduction of very sensitive methods of estimating the levels have led to its isolation and identification of its physico-chemical characteristics in the human and also to the physio-pathological study of its secretion. The authors demonstrate a human homologous radio-immune level estimating technique which uses a human anti-prolactin serum obtained from the rabbit human prolactin highly purified with iodine 125 using the lacto-peroxydase method. This radio-immune level estimation constitutes a feasible and satisfactory approach for the base level of prolactin. The spread of results which have been obtained, however, showed that one sole estimation is not sufficient. The authors draw attention to the need to carry out dynamic tests of stimulation or of braking in order to reveal possible abnormalities of prolactin secretion.
