A case of eosinophilic fasciitis (EF), associated with monoclonal gammopathy, thyroglobulin antibodies, pericarditis and colitis, is described. The occurrence of EF in the framework of a multisystem disease is the outstanding feature, contrasting with the absence of visceral involvement or solitary organ involvement in the large majority of cases. The unusual histologic features of the colitis and beneficial effect of cimetidine on EF are discussed.
A middle-aged man presented with recurrent alveolar hemorrhage, rheumatoid arthritis, and crescentic immune complex-mediated glomerulonephritis. Nail bed hemorrhages and necrotizing vasculitis were documented concomitantly with the clinical picture of Goodpasture's syndrome. Perusal of the literature disclosed two additional similar cases. It is suggested that Goodpasture's syndrome may evolve in the framework of rheumatoid vasculitis. While immunosuppressive therapy resulted in short-term remission, two of the three patients involved developed late-stage renal failure.
We report a rare case of arteriovenous haemangioma of the knee joint in a girl. This treatable entity should be included in the differential diagnosis of nonspecific recurrent knee swelling or pain in children.
Hepatomegaly, chronic diarrhea, and weight loss in a middle-aged woman were found to be due to massive hepatic steatosis and adult celiac disease. After she was on a gluten-free diet for 1 yr, improvement in clinical, laboratory, and pathological parameters was witnessed. Massive hepatic steatosis complicating adult celiac disease is an uncommon occurrence, differing from other, more frequently encountered hepatopathies in this disease, insofar as pathogenetic and prognostic aspects are concerned.
Since 1897 a total of 37 cases of extracardiac rhabdomyomas of the fetal type have been reported in the literature. Only two of these were localized in the larynx. We report an additional case of extracardiac rhabdomyoma localized in the larynx, and the pertinent literature is discussed. Although rare, its existence should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of laryngeal tumours.
A patient with agnogenic myeloid metaplasia, who developed lymphomatoid granulomatosis of the lung is reported. The unusual combination of these myelo- and lymphoproliferative diseases is discussed.
A case of sialadenoma papilliferum of the parotid gland in a 35-year-old woman is described. The tumor was locally excised and no recurrence was evident after a follow-up period of 30 months.
Four initially misdiagnosed cases of thyroid cancer or purported thyroideal malignancy are described. In each, aspirative cytology was instrumental in establishing the true nature of the lesion.

Glomerulonephritis was induced in rats by multiple injections of rabbit anti-rat kidney serum. Colchicine was administered daily for 4 months to nephrotoxic serum treated rats and untreated control animals. Nephritic rats receiving colchicine had significantly less proteinuria and less glomerular damage than unprotected nephritis animals. A possible role for colchicine in the early treatment of human glomerulonephritis is suggested.
Using Mancini's single radial immunodiffusion technique, the excretion of a liver specific saline soluble antigen was semiquantitatively assayed in the urine of rats with thioacetamine induced hepatic necrosis. The relative amounts of antigen detected in the urine were found to roughly correlate with the extent of necrotic liver parenchyma. It is suggested that a quantitative approach to histuria may provide clinically relevant information on the activity of pathologic processes associated with release of organ specific antigens from degenerative and necrotic lesions into the circulation (histemia) and thence into the urine.
A comparative immunofluorescence and light microscopical study of the three cell types of the juxtaglomerular apparatus (pure muscle cells, pure granular cells and mixed cells) was performed on the growing and maturing kidney of the rat. Mixed cells, containing contractile protein and secretory granules, are detectable on the first postnatal day in about one third of the JGAs. From the third week, the number of bivalent cells increases, while the proportion of pure muscle or pure granular cells decreases. Morphological and functional maturation, achieved by 3 to 4 weeks, is associated with increasing numbers of bivalent cells and a shift in the main site of renin production from the inner to the outer cortical zone. The divergent internal structure of JGA cell types expresses the range of varied differentiation expressed by one cell line. Pure muscle or granular cells are at the extremes of the range and mixed cells take up an intermediate position.

Saline or BSA were instilled 2, 5, 8 or 11 times at daily intervals into the parotid glands of rats, via Stensen's duct. Hydropic change of the acinar cells developed after 8 and 11 instillations. Histologically, the lesion was characterized by enlargement of the acinar cells, the cytoplasm of which contained vacuoles displacing the nuclei. In view of the negative results of various histochemical reactions the vacuolization was interpreted as hydropic in nature.
