Intraoperative angiography in intestinal angiodysplasia.

Intraoperative angiography is quite useful in locating the site of bleeding in patients with angiodysplasia of the small intestine. We recommend the placement preoperatively of an angiographic catheter in these patients. We have described a technique that complements this procedure with metallic clip labeling to locate precisely the area of bleeding. This method of treatment is illustrated in the present study by reports of patients bleeding from vascular malformations of the ileum, duodenum and the head of the pancreas.

Mainstreaming: fulfilling the promise?

Four assumptions that propelled the movement away from self-contained classes for EMR children and towards mainstreaming were presented. Available data were provided for each assumption that indicated the extent to which the initial assumption has been realized. Overall, the data did not indicate major improvement in the caliber of education provided to EMR children as a consequence of the mainstreaming movement. The limitations of present conceptions of mainstreaming were cited as was the possibility of a need to redefine the concept of least restrictive environment.

Physical stigma and academic performance as factors affecting children's first impressions of handicapped peers.

The effects of four variables on attitudes toward children were studied: the sex and social status of the rater and the physical appearance and academic competence of the target child being rated. The results indicated that competent and physically nonstigmatized children were rated more favorably than incompetent and physically stigmatized children. The data also revealed that girls had a significantly more positive stereotype than did boys of a competent male target child but that boys were more willing to be in physical proximity to the male target child as measured by a social-distance scale. Finally, the results indicated that popular children rated the attractive and competent target child less favorably than children who were not so popular. However, the popular children rated the attractive and incompetent target child more favorably than the less popular children did. The findings were discussed in terms of the salience of physical labels (i.e., stigma) on attitudes toward children.

Stereotypic attitudes and behavioral intentions toward handicapped children.

Fifty-six junion-high-school pupils were questioned about their attitudes toward mentally retarded and crippled children. Same- and opposite-sex ratings of stereotypes and behavioral intentions were obtained. Results indicated a significant main effect for handicap condition, with stereotypic attitudes toward the crippled child being more favorable than attitudes toward the mentally retarded child. No differences in attitudes toward the two handicapping conditions emerged on the measure of behavioral intentions. Sex of the subject and sex of the handicapped child being rated did not significantly affect attitude scores in this study. The data were discussed in relation to the many methodological difficulties encountered in attitude research toward handicapped populations.

Phase I studies with Baker's Antifol (BAF) (NSC 139105).

Phase I studies were conducted in 58 adult cancer patients with Baker's Antifol (BAF), a new active-site directed inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase. Dose escalation ranged from 10 to 250 mg/m2/day X 5 days and courses of treatment were repeated every 2-3 weeks. Biologic effects were observed mostly at doses greater than 100 mg/m2/day X 5 days. The patients developed myelosuppression during 19% of the trials. Other types of toxicity were dermatitis in 12 to 30% and stomatitis in 7 to 38% of the trials. Toxicity was directly related to the impairment of the patient's liver function. Two partial responses (in a patient with adenocarcinoma of the lung and a patient with transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder) occurred. BAF is an active new chemotherapeutic agent which deserves further clinical trials in patients with various malignancies.

Attitudes toward mentally retarded persons: effects of attitude referent specificity.

The effects of the specificity of the attitude referent on female adults' expressed attitudes were studied. Specifically, attitudes towards "mentally retarded person" referent were compared with attitudes toward mentally retarded referents who were described in terms of their severity of retardation and CA. Results indicated that expressed attitudes toward a nondescript mentally retarded person referent were generally intermediate in favorability between mildy and severely retarded person referents. The response format of the attitude questionnaire (e.g., Likert, forced-choice) was also found to affect attitude scores differentially as a function of the referent employed.

Bacillus Calmette-Guérin immunotherapy in combination with DTIC (NSC-45388) for the treatment of malignant melanoma.

Combination studies of immunotherapy and DTIC chemotherapy for patients with malignant melanoma are described. At our institute the combination of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) with DTIC, or DTIC plus methyl-CCNU, has resulted in augmentation of remissions in areas regional to BCG immunization, prolongation of chemotherapy-induced remissions, and significant prolongation of survival compared to the use of DTIC chemotherapy without immunotherapy. Data from other centers have shown that augmentation of remissions for melanoma patients occurred when BCG was combined with DTIC, vincristine, and allogeneic tumor cells. Finally, another study has shown that DTIC combined with BCG has prolonged the disease-free interval and survival in melanoma patients with regional lymph node metastases. The potential inhibition of DTIC metabolism by BCG or Corynebacterium parvum is discussed.
