Amino acid content of human semen in normal and infertility cases.

Reports concerning the content of alpha-amino-nitrogen and amino-acids in human semen are few and results are different with authors. These variations could be explained by the no considerations of the changes due to liquefaction. In order to test this possible effect, measures were performed 30 mm, 1 h 30, 3 h and 5 h after seminal collection. Deproteinization was obtained with mixture of barium hydroxide and zinc sulfate. The data were compared to results of spermiogram. According to seminal parameters, 6 categories were distinguished. Measures showed a significant increase of the alpha-amino-nitrogen with time. The chromatography separation showed 19 different free amino-acids. The content of the most amino-acids increased with time except phosphoserine, taurine and ornithine; several amino-acids appear. In cases of azoospermia, levels of alpha-amino-nitrogen and amino-acids were lower. The content of amino-acids is not influenced by the spermatozoa count that seems to indicate their glandular origins. The free amino-acids content had to be considered in regard to cases with low liquefaction. But, in all cases it appears necessary to use a strictly standardized method since results are influenced with time.

Determination of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) antigen in seminal plasma by modified enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA).

The determination of tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) antigen in semen by a new immunoenzymatic method was done in 152 men without genito urinary pathology. The seminal value is one hundred higher than the blood value with a log normal distribution. These levels are not influenced by freezing temperature, by the sequences freezing-thawing, by centrifugation. From split ejaculates a correlation has been established between t-PA antigen and zinc and not with fructose. These results indicate the major prostatic origin of the t-PA antigen.

Fructose and proteins in human semen.

The aim of this study was to correlate human seminal fructose determinations by enzymatic UV method with protein content, using three different methods (Biuret, Lowry, Meulemans). On one hand, the incidence on fructose levels of partial deproteinization after treatment by perchloric acid was tested: the fructose levels values increased after deproteinization 14.1 +/- 3.7 versus 4.2 +/- 1.7 mMol/l. On the other hand, physiologically, semen proteolysis occurs for many hours after collection and concerns mainly low molecular weight proteins. No modifications were found in protid levels and fructose concentrations during the first four hours, at 20 degrees C. All these data seem to indicate a better linkage of fructose to the highest molecular weight proteins and might explain the absence of fructose rise during the first four hours.

On some glycosidases (beta-D-mannosidase, alpha-L-fucosidase, N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase) of human seminal plasma.

The glycosidase activities (beta-D-mannosidase, alpha-L-fucosidase and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase) have been compared in whole and split ejaculate samples from men whose couple suffers from infertility. The site of secretion of enzymatic activities is either prostatic or epididymal. The three enzymatic activities have possibly different origin and should constitute new biochemical markers of male genital tract.

[Use of transthoracic impedance in the monitoring of ventilation in neonatal resuscitation].

Continuous transthoracic impedance recording is a useful procedure for pulmonary ventilation control in term and preterm infants. The innocuity, ease and reliability of this method makes its use possible in neonatal intensive care. Its convenience is obvious in some physiological and pathological circumstances especially during apnea. The conditions of application, the physiological origins of impedance variations and the present limits of utilization are discussed.

[Abdominal tuberculosis in childhood: the clinical manifestations].

The authors reviewed the histories of 133 patients with abdominal tuberculosis in Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño (Children's Hospital), Lima, Perú, between 1989 and 1991. We found morbidity higher in scholars (67.4%). Weight lost were present in all cases and malaise in 95.3%, abdominal distension in 83.72% and abdominal pain in 79.06%. Anaemia in 76.06%, ratio albumin/globulin were altered in 74.41% leukocytosis in 67.44%. Evidence of tuberculosis on chest X-ray were detected only in 62.5%.
