Left spermatic vein syndrome.

The left spermatic vein syndrome might be characterized as a compression of the left ureter in its proximal segment by the pathologically altered left spermatic vein with impairment of the urine flow which causes urine congestion and its consequences.

[Urinary tract infection in childhood (author's transl)].

The urinary tract infection ranks fourth among children's disorders, coming after contagious diseases and infection of the respiratory and digestive organs. Half of the children who have urinary tract infections are in early infancy, and the remaining 50 per cent are divided almost uniformly among those between the ages of 2 and 14. In keeping with the underlying causes, our material can be broken down as follows: in a fourth of the cases the disorder was such as to require an operation; 8 per cent of the children showed a neurologically disturbed micturition; about 40 per cent had a genuine distal urethral stenosis, and another 25 per cent showed changes in the urethral orifice and in the external genitals.

Radioimmunoassays of ethinyl-norgestrienone (R-2323) and medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) and their clinical applicability.

Radioimmunoassays for 2 synthetic progestins (Ethinyl-norgestrienone, R 2323 and medroxyprogesterone acetate, MPA) are demonstrated. 10 patients aged 31 to 72 years were treated with ethinyl-norgestrienone with different schedules and 3 men suffering from benign prostatic hypertrophy were treated with medroxygesterone acetate. Plasma levels of testosterone, LH, FSH were monitored before, during and after treatment.

Oxidative phosphorylation and aspects of calcium metabolism in myocardia of hypercholesterolaemic swine with moderate coronary atherosclerosis.

Aspects of myocardial oxidative phosphorylation and Ca2+ metabolism were studied in a swine model in which coronary atherosclerosis was induced by a combination of denudation of the endothelium of the coronary arteries plus 7--11 months of feeding a high fat--high cholesterol diet. By microscopy, a moderate amount of coronary atherosclerosis was present at the time of sacrifice, and 2 of the 14 swine hearts had old myocardial infarcts. Myocardial mitochondria from grossly normal areas showed partial uncoupling and decreased state 3 O2 uptake with 3 of 4 substrates tested. In addition, Ca2+ stimulated mitochondrial respiration was decreased in the atherosclerotic swine. In the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ uptake under conditions of heavy loading was greater in the atherosclerotic swine than in control animals. The degree of atherosclerosis was not great enough to suggest that persistent myocardial ischaemia was present. Possibly coronary artery spasm induced an intermittent ischaemia resulting in the metabolic abnormalities observed, or the changes may have been brought about by the effects of the high fat--high cholesterol diet on subcellular membranes.

Sulfinpyrazone and postoperative deep vein thrombosis.

Small doses of subcutaneous heparin and infusions of dextran both reduce the incidence of fatal pulmonary embolism after elective general surgery. But both methods have disadvantages. Therefore, the protection against deep vein thrombosis afforded by sulfinpyrazone, a drug which can be taken by mouth as well as by injection, was assessed in a prospective study of 119 patients undergoing elective general or urological surgery. The prophylactic administration of sulfinpyrazone was compared with the effects of small doses of sodium heparin and infusions of dextran-70. The 125I-fibrinogen test was carried out in all patients during their hospitalization. Deep vein thrombosis was diagnosed in 13 of 30 patients (43%) who received sulfinpyrazone, in 9 of 29 (31%) receiving dextran-70 and in 2 of 22 (9%) having subcutaneous heparin. The difference between the sulfinpyrazone and heparin groups was statistically significant (p less than 0.01). Sulfinpyrazone in the dose used in this trial was not effective in reducing the incidence of deep vein thrombosis during elective general surgery.

[Plasma prolactin in different age groups (author's transl)].

After a detailed introduction to the problems of radioimmunological measurement of Prolactin and a review of the possible connections between PRL and urological and andrological diseases, respectively, the results of Prolactin measurements carried out with a Prolactin Radioimmunoassay Kit (Cea-Ire-Sorin) will be described. This Kit makes use of the "double antibody" method. In 99 healthy male subjects the plasma levels of Prolactin in 3 age groups were ascertained. These were as follows: Group I ages 10 to 20: 2.4+/-1.2 ng/ml; group II ages 20 to 40: 3.9+/-1.5 ng/ml; group III ages 50 to 80: 5.2+/-3.8 ng/ml. In the cases of 4 patients suffering from prostate cancer stage D, treated with hormones at various intervals and after orchiectomy the range of PRL levels was 13.1--18.7 ng/ml.

[Effect of long-term treatment with synthetic oestrogens on plasma lipids and arterial vessels in male rabbits (author's transl)].

The effects of long-term treatment with synthetic oestrogens (Retalon retard, Sanabo Ltd., Wien, 5 mg/kg i.m. at weekly intervals) were investigated in 12 male rabbits and compared with the data obtained in 9 saline-treated control animals. After 6 months of treatment the oestrogen group showed significantly higher plasma phospholipid (p less than 0.005) and cholesterol (p less than 0.01) concentrations than the control group. However, histological examination of various important arterial vessels (the aorta and the coronary, cerebral, limb and renal arteries) revealed no pathological changes indicative of premature atherosclerosis in either the oestrogen group or in the control group. It is concluded that long-term treatment with synthetic oestrogens does not result in a higher incidence of atherosclerosis in rabbits.
