Accumulation of 99mTc-tetracycline in lung infarction area. An experimental study.

In 10 dogs, lung infarction of the right middle and of the left inferior lobe was obtained experimentally. 1 h after operation, 2.0 mCi 99mtechnetium-tetracycline was given intravenously. 5 h after injection, a maximum of accumulation in the infarcted tissue was detected. Conventional perfusion scintigrams were done by injecting 0.2 mCi of 131iodine-albumin particles. Correspondingly, a perfusion reduction in the infarcted area was seen by this technique. This method described seems promising for clinical use for the detection of lung infarction. Clinical studies in this field are in progress.

[Nomenclature of regional tissue changes in periodontal diseases].

The nomenclature of periodontal diseases has undergone repeated alterations in the course of time. An important reason for this was the difficulty of reconciling the clinical symptomatology, which must always be the basis of a classification, with the nature of the tissue changes, i.e. with the pathogenetic principles underlying them.

[Quantitative changes of the cytotrophoblast in underweight and normalweight newborn after risk pregnancy and antepartal therapy (author's transl)].

A histochemical-morphometric method was used to determine at the cytotrophoblast of 73 placentas, changes in the composition of the syncytium and in the Langhans' cell count in underweight and normalweight newborn with or without antepartal maternal therapy in comparison to newborn after uneventful pregnancy. The reduction of the percentage share of mature syncytium when the share of predegenerative and degenerative syncytium is increased, as weil as the increase in the average Langhans' cell count in the placentas of premature infants, hypotrophic and eutrophic infants delivered at term after risk pregnancy, compared with normal controls, is statistically significant. Significant differences in the percentage share of mature syncytium between the placentas of premature infants and hypotrophic infants delivered at term, as well as between placentas of eutrophic infants delivered at term, depending of the nature and severity of the risk, are discussed in connection with the significance of the syncytium for the processes of material transport. No correlation with the Apgar score and the occurrence of the respiratory distress syndrome of newborn, nor with the duration of the first and second stage of lavor with macroscopic placenta peculiarities, have been found. The good correlation between placenta findings and classification characteristics of newborn, and clinical aspects of the course of pregnancy, allows the possibility of diagnostic evaluation. Our results indicat also that the morphological performance must be included in the considerations explaining the success of treatment of placental insufficiency.

[Relationships between the HPL determination in maternal serum and the condition of the associated placental villous trophoblast].

Relationships between the determination of human placental lactogen in materna serum and the condition of associated placental villous trophoblasts.--Taking as a starting point both qualitative and quantitative differences in the composition of placental villous trophoblasts subsequent to risk pregnancies, the proportions of different qualities of syncytium and average numbers of Langhans' cells per field of view in 24 placentas of neonates of the 37th to 41st weeks of pregnancy are compared with the corresponding maternal serum HPL (human placental lactogen) values. The significantly lower proportion of mature syncytium determined in the case of a low HPL value as well as the result of linear regression analysis are indicative of a dependence of maternal serum values for HPL upon the proportion of mature syncytium. This particular result is also interpreted by the authors as confirming the view that "mature" syncytium can be considered to be "functional" syncytium. Like other investigators, the present authors should also point out the importance of the total mass of placenta which can compensate for lower proportions of functional syncytium in individual resorption villi. Whereas there are clearly evident relationships between the maternal estriol values and the condition of placental villous trophoblasts, such relationships could not be observed in our material for oxytocinase and HSAP.

Aneurysms of the coronary arteries in infants and children. A review, and report of six cases.

In recent years large numbers of the so-called "mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome" or "Kawasaki's disease" have been described by Japanese workers, but instances of this disorder are only now being reported as isolated cases by European or North American physicians. The disease has, therefore, been considered to be a new entity. One of its most striking features is the development of aneurysms of the coronary arteries in infants or children, which may lead to sudden death. Aneurysms of the coronary arteries in childhood are rare, and hence it was considered relevant to report six such cases, and to examine their possible relationship to Kawasaki's disease. The pathological changes underlying the latter disorder are not well known; they are considered to be indistinguishable from infantile polyarteritis nodosa. A diagnosis of polyarteritis nodosa was also thought to be most likely to apply in the cases presented here, particularly in view of the frequency with which aneurysms of the coronary arteries have been found in this disorder. In the absence of valid pathological distinctions between Kawasaki's disease and infantile polyarteritis nodosa, the question arises whether these entities are, in fact, different, and whether Kawasaki's disease is the new entity it is assumed to be.

[Quantitative alterations to resorption villi of normal human placentae in the course of gestation (author's transl)].

A total of 45 placentae of different gestatory age were used to study, after clinically and anamnestically normal pregnancy and by a morphometric method, the quantitative behavior of individual parts of the placental barrier in the course of gestation. For this, hematoxylin-stained preparations and enzyme-incubated semi-thin sections were used. The increase in the percentage of fetal vascular surface with a simultaneous decrease in the relative percentage of villous surface (when determining the ratio of villous surface surrounded by maternal blood to the fetal vascular surface) up to the 28th week of gestation must be considered an expression of an increase in the capability of function. The simultaneous distinct decrease in the average number of Langhans cells and the reduction of their less differentiated forms in favor of those showing a higher degree of differentiation allow to make the conclusion that around the 28th week of gestation conditions in individual villi are, in general, similar to those prevailing in term placentae between the 37th and 41st weeks of gestation. The results obtained from the basis of quantitative studies of the placentae of premature infants and babies born at term after different gestatory risks.
