We report 4 patients who developed allergic contact dermatitis after ultrasound investigations. Patch testing was positive with conducting gels, and in 2 cases with propylene glycol. Contact dermatitis to gels is also seen in electrographic practice and after transcutaneous electrical analgesia.

During 1972-1984, 13 cases of allergy to safety shoes were found. It generally affects young men. The allergens are very different from those in other types of shoe. The presence of mercaptobenzothiazole and dibenzothiazyl disulfide detected in some nonwoven materials is worthy of note.

Twelve standard textile dyes were analyzed using thin layer chromatography and studied comparatively with dyes supposed to be chemically similar, having the same Colour Index number or Registration Code. According to the chromatograms, Disperse Yellow 3, Disperse Orange 1, Disperse Orange 3 and Disperse Orange 13 seemed, at least in the solvent system used, to be pure, while all the other dyes, in the same eluent system, seemed impure. All the standard Textile Dye allergens were similar to the dyes used in the clothing industry. Their use in patch tests may prove useful, without overlooking the fact that a difference from that in a suspected textile may occur.

In 22 nickel-sensitive subjects, 57 metal clothing objects were said to be not tolerated (37) or tolerated (20). They were analysed by X-ray energy dispersion in electron microscopy, and by the dimethylglyoxime spot test. The correlation between the analytical results and the statements of patients is discussed. Patch tests to nickel-plated metal samples with various thicknesses of chromium (0.25 mu to 1 mu) or gold/copper/cadmium (0.5 mu) were performed in human subjects or in guinea pigs sensitive to nickel. Surface-plating and anticorrosive techniques, as well as the results in nickel-sensitive subjects, are described and discussed. Good tolerance will not be obtained under experimental conditions if nickel in any form is a component of the object. It is to be hoped that appropriate regulations will prohibit the use of nickel in the manufacture of clothing objects.
9 patients with typical textile dermatitis were found to be allergic to dark polyester blouses. Thin-layer chromatography of the dyes extracted from the fabrics identified the presence of several dyes, from which Disperse Blue 106 was positive in all patients.
Thin-layer (uni-dimensional and bi-dimensional) chromatography studies were performed on 52 beige stockings and pantyhose from different countries. They demonstrated the presence of Disperse Yellow 3 in 51 and Disperse Orange 3 in 15 stockings. In the absence of isolation and spectroscopic identification of the dyes, these results are strong clues to their presence.

6 cases of hypersensitivity to Tixocortol pivalate and 3 to Amcinonide are reported. The 9 female patients all presented with features of contact dermatitis.
The first detailed description of an epicutaneous test in a case of allergy was probably in 1847 by Städeler, a chemist at the University of Göttingen. A review of the history of the tests is given; touch and other investigations such as Städeler's blotting paper strip, Jadassohn's application method (1895) and Fabre's blotting-paper square (1897).
Observations concerning contact dermatitis to derivatives of isothiazolin-3-one are reported. A systematic review of the literature of previously published cases is reported. A verified contact dermatitis to benzisothiazolin-3-one of a laborer in a rubber factory is discussed. Another case of occupational dermatitis concerns an allergy to a commercial product, containing 2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one as a preservative and utilized by shoe factory workers. Additionally, cases of an allergy to cosmetic preparations, containing a mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one, are elaborated.
