[The importance of HLA typing in cases of disputed paternity].

In dispute paternity, the biologists must reply to two questions: 1. Is the paternity excluded or possible? 2. If it is possible, what is its probability? Valid answers can be given, using several genetic markers, among which HLA genes are specially interesting. Looking at HLA-A, B, C, DR typing of child, mother and presumed father, we propose a method which allows a direct calculation of paternity probability. Crossing over between HLA genes in presumed father and in mother are also considered in this method. In our experience, adding the date provided by the HLA genes and other genetic markers, we obtained, either formal exclusions, or possible paternities with a probability almost always higher than 90%.

Psychological and dynamic aspects of handicaps.

Within a research program on the functional approach of the handicap we have realized a psychological survey in order to test the relationship between the functional approach and the desires of the disabled. 72 handicapped persons, fairly representative of the general population of our area, were included into the study. A coded interview, a projection test and a connotation test were carried out and their result computerized and statistically analyzed. The results show clearly that the handicap, if it modifies the daily life of the subjects, has no repercussion on personality tendencies. The emotional repercussion of experienced situations is independent of the characteristics of the handicap. The perception of his body is, for the handicapped, in reference to the others. Confrontation favors the integration of handicapped people. The experience of being handicapped in daily life exists only in situations where the others are involved.

[Extramembranous glomerulonephritis following hepatitis-B. Simultaneous disappearance of serum virus antigen and glomerular lesions (author's transl)].

A 24-year old female patient developed extramembranous glomerulonephritis 8 months after acute hepatitis-B with virus antigen persisting in the serum. Two years later, the glomerular lesions were found to be clinically and histologically cured, with parallel disappearance of the antigen from the serum. Although the presence of HBsAg in the glomeruli could not be demonstrated, it is likely from the sequence of events that hepatitis-B virus was responsible for the renal disease.

[Saralasin and prediction of the surgical result in renovascular arterial hypertension].

The response of arterial pressure to an infusion of saralasin was compared to the effect of surgical correction of renal vascular lesions (3 to 6 months after surgery) in eleven patients whose hypertension was associated with uni or bilateral stenosis of renal artery. Saralasin was infused after four days of dietary sodium restriction (10-40 mEq/day). An excellent correlation (r = 0.83, p less than 0.005) between the effects of saralasin and surgery was obtained. There was no correlation between the response to saralasin or to surgery and the ratio of renal vein renin activities. It is suggested that saralasin may be a good tool for predicting the effect of surgery in renovascular hypertension, when infused in moderately sodium depleted patients.

The renin-angiotensin system and the antihypertensive effect of atenolol in man.

The effects on arterial pressure of saralasin and short-term (seven days) administration of the cardioselective beta-blocker atenolol were compared in 21 patients with various forms of hypertension. During saralasin administration mean arterial pressure (MAP) decreased by 8.8 +/- 2.1 per cent. Atenolol administration was associated with a MAP fall of 23.6 +/- 2.9 per cent. The change in MAP induced by atenolol was higher than that produced by saralasin (P less than 0.001) and no significant correlation (r = 0.40, P greater than 0.05) between their respective effects was found. These results suggest that the antihypertensive action of atenolol is not related to pre-treatment activity of the renin-angiotensin system as estimated by the hypotensive effect of saralasin. Other mechanisms should be sought in order to explain the effectiveness of this betablocker in hypertensive patients.

[Assessment of vigilance].

Two aspects of vigilance are to be distinguished: the quantitative one refers to sleep-wakefulness dimension and the qualitative one refers to focusing of attention. Their combination leads to a curvilinear relationship between activation and performances. After describing the psychometric characteristics of vigilance tests, some examples are given of simple paper-pencil or more sophisticated methods. Physiological indices are also approached. The sources of variation influencing vigilance measurement are presented and also some useful experimental designs. At last some remarks are made on statistical exploitation and interpretation of results.

[Treatment of arterial hypertension with acebutolol. Clinical results].

Acebutolol was given to a group of 23 subjects with essential arterial hypertension associated with tachycardia at rest. In 70 p.cent of the cases, arterial blood pressure was rapidly influenced by the treatment. The favorable results are mostly-but not exclusively-found among the subjects with the highest initial sympathetic reactivity and renin plasmatic activity. However, there is no correlation between the quality of the result and the degree of reduction of renin activity or heart rate.

[The association between pheochromocytoma and brown fat pseudotumor].

A new case of an association between phaeochromocytoma and a brown fat pseudo-tumour is presented, with arteriographic and histological documents. The case serves to emphasize the difficulties in diagnosis related to the confusing coexistence of the two entities and to discuss the role of catecholamines in the growth of brown adipose tissue under normal and pathological circumstances.
